He won't be back: Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Total Recall' debuts to weak sales

Arnold Schwarzenegger promised us his new memoir Total Recall would tell the story we don’t know, but he never counted on people not wanting to know that story in the first place.

The tell-all hit shelves on Oct. 1 and only managed to move 21,000 copies in its first week of publication, according to figures provided by Nielsen Bookscan. The sales were enough to land it on the third spot of Top 10 Adult Non Fiction list, ahead of Stephen Colbert’s America Again and Neil Young’s Waging Heavy Peace, but behind Mark Owen’s mega-seller No Easy Day.

Total Recall was extensively promoted, with Schwarzenegger starring in a cinematic book trailer (debuted exclusively on EW.com) and making appearances on The Daily Show and 60 Minutes, where he spoke candidly of his affair with Mildred Baena. There’s still time to pump up the sales, however. We are heading into the holiday season after all, and what would make a better gift for your relatives than Arnold Schwarzenegger’s memoir? (Well, at least my relatives.)

In the trailer for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s upcoming tell-all — which EW debuted exclusively last week — the Governator promised that his fans would learn the story we don’t know about him in Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story. That tease brought to mind the scandal that was splashed all over the headlines and led to the end of his marriage last year.

Schwarzenegger comes through on that promise by delivering a detailed account (Via ABC News) of how his now ex-wife Maria Shriver confronted him about the secret lovechild he had with their married housekeeper Mildred Baena. On Jan. 4, 2011, the day after Schwarzenegger’s term as governor of California came to an end, Shriver arranged a couples counseling session in which the therapist asked him if he had fathered a child with Baena. According to the book, he immediately admitted to the infidelity and begged Shriver for forgiveness, calling her “the perfect wife.” READ FULL STORY

No, we don’t mean the 1990 movie. Or the 2012 remake. This Total Recall is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s upcoming memoir — chronicling his rise from Austrian bodybuilder to action hero to governor of California — and we have an exclusive look!

After leaving the governor’s mansion in January 2011, Schwarzenegger announced his plans to return to movie-making. (He did always say he’d be back.) He kicked things off nice and slow with a cameo in last month’s The Expendables 2, but his real big-screen comeback starts with The Last Stand, out this January. Until then, however, Arnold fans have his new autobiography to tide them over. Check out the trailer, which is epic in the way only an Arnold Schwarzenegger book trailer could be: READ FULL STORY
