An extraterrestrial interview with 'Rise of Nine' author Pittacus Lore -- EXCLUSIVE

When Lorien elder Pittacus Lore called me earlier this week, I had a hard time understanding him at first. Of course it was due to the voice-changer he was using to hide his identity, as he is in the midst of a high-stakes, intergalactic battle against the Mogadorians. At great personal risk, Lore spoke to EW about his new book Rise of Nine (Aug. 21) in the Lorien Legacies series. He also shared his thoughts on the I Am Number Four movie and what Loriens like to read and watch. Also read on for news of Lore’s possible book signing appearances in the future.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Your books have been widely read since I Am Number Four. Are you loving the author’s life?
PITTACUS LORE: I don’t live an author’s life. I live the life of a general at war. While I have been writing the books during moments of peace, my full-time job is hunting and killing Mogadorians. That being said, I appreciate all the support we have gotten from readers around the world.

Have you enjoyed interacting with earthling readers?
Yes I have. I interact with them online every day and occasionally I show up at events though none of them know I am actually Pittacus Lore. Readers of Earth have been great to me and to the other Loriens here on Earth.

What can we expect from Rise of Nine?
Rise of Nine starts more or less where the Power of Six ends. Number 4 and Number 6 are trying to find the other Lorien on Earth. They are both wounded and have both fought massive battles. They are trying to find their brothers and sisters so that they can end the reign of terror brought on by the Mogadorians.

Will Four and Six succeed?
I do believe they will succeed but we are still in the middle of the war. If you read Rise of Nine you will see we make great progress.

Everyone wants to know if we’ll meet Five and Eight.
Five and Eight, yes, you will meet Five and Eight. You meet at least one of them in this book, maybe both of them, though I won’t tell you exactly because I want readers to be surprised by what they come across in the narrative.

Can you tell us anything more about them?
They are Loriens. They live in hiding. One of them may be in South America, one of them may be in India.

Will there still be six books in the series?
There will be books until the war ends. We have done some digital novellas [click here] that we didn’t expect to do because there were more stories to tell that were not novel-length. But as long as the Mogadorians are here and as long as the Mogadorians are hunting us, we will continue to tell the story.

We haven’t spoken to you since the I Am Number Four movie came out. What did you think of it?
I loved the movie. Often in my down time when I am not writing, I watch the DVD or I watch it on my iPad. It was very exciting to work with Mr. Bay and Mr. Spielberg. And we were very happy with all the exposure it brought to our situation.

Do Loriens prefer paper books or digital books?
We read both. Most Loriens have iPads, a few of us have Kindles. We all occasionally like an old-fashioned book. It feels nice in our hands, and it smells nice, and it’s a nice way to do it.

What books written by earthlings have you been reading?
I read Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. I just read The Fallen Angel by Daniel Silva. I am currently reading Broken Harbor by Tana French. Neal Stephenson is probably my favorite Earth author. His science fiction yarns are remarkable.

What movies have you been watching?
I saw the Hunger Games recently and enjoyed it. I have not been able to see Batman 3 yet but I may go this week. I tend to watch a lot of television. The shows on Bravo are my favorite.

Bravo will introduce you to the oddest human behaviors.
Gallery Girls premiered last night. It was quite enjoyable. Those girls, they’re kind of wacky. And Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. He makes us all laugh.

How do Loriens keep in touch with each other?
Sometimes we use the Internet, although it is an archaic system by our standards. E-mail can be effective. Of course, our e-mail addresses are always masked and run through anonymizers. Sometimes we call each other on encrypted cell phones. Sometimes we meet. We are trying to organize an end-of-summer Lorien barbecue.

Will any readers be invited?
A few readers. We keep in touch with readers. Especially specific readers because they provide logistical support and occasionally supper.

Will you ever show your face at a book signing?
There have been some discussions about doing it. If I did I would have to be heavily guarded in case the Mogadorians or some of our other enemies showed up. But yes, I think there will be a time where I come out as myself.

Anything else you want to tell your readers?
We’re very humbled and honored that so many Earthlings read our books and we profoundly appreciate their support. We hope they love the Rise of Nine. We think that it is a great, entertaining suspenseful book, and we thank them, truly thank them. To Lorien and to Earth.
