Jay Asher, who wrote the bestselling 2007 anti-bullying book Thirteen Reasons Why, is teaming up with author Carolyn Mackler to pen a new young adult novel titled The Future of Us, Penguin announced today. The book, about Josh and Emma, two close friends in 1996 who use AOL—such period accuracy!—and discover the Facebook pages of their future selves, is set to hit stores in November. From the plot description, it appears it will be lighter in tone than Asher’s suicide-themed Thirteen Reasons Why, which is currently being developed by Universal Studios as a film to star Selena Gomez.

Readers will be able get an early taste of The Future of Us this summer. An excerpt will be included in the paperback edition of Thirteen Reasons Why, which goes on sale June 14.

I read “13 Reasons Why” a while ago so I don’t really remember the anti-bullying aspect…I think I’m going to have to read it again.

That’s strange the movie would star selena gomez she doesn’t seem right for the movie.

I know. I was thinking Saiorse Ronan, the girl from Hanna and The Lovely Bones.

That’s exactly who I pictured as I was reading Thirteen Reasons Why… Saiorse Ronan just seems like the perfect girl because she has dealt with an extremely deep story line before… But we will give Selena a shot because she iss a good actress… Let’s see

.. Selena Gomez does not posess the emotional depth or talent to play a character as amazing and complex as Hanna. Keep Disney Channel actors away!

So excited to read Jay’s new book. Now I’ll have to buy the paperback to sit next to my signed copy hardback. I wonder if he’ll address cyber-bullying since the characters will be reading their future facebook accounts. Maybe even find out that they aren’t friends anymore because of a rumour spread online.

that sounds like way too much of a “very special episode” kind of scenario.

Wow now I’m tempted to go buy the paperback for the preview. Smart marketing move there Penguin. :P

Selena may be a sweet girl and all.But i coulnt really imagine her playing anything challenging.Shes always the sweet girl in all of her films.

I loved 13 Reasons Why. As soon as I caught a glimpse of it on Amazon, I had to read it. But honestly, Selena Gomez would not be fit for the role. She’s cute and all fuzzy wuzzy, but that’s exactly why they should cast someone else. As someone else mentioned, keep Disney stars away. This isn’t their type of work.

i honestly think that selena can pull this off. give the disney stars a chance to break off the “typical disney role”.
i cant stand the “disney stereotype”.

  • meg

ok everyone, give selena a break. not all disney stars continue to play “typical disney roles”.
look at Shia LeBouf. he broke out of the “disney channel stereotypes” and has played some pretty intense roles since then. i think we all forget the days he played as louis steven on “Even Stevens”.

so true i love selena but come on hannah is a difficult role to play not some disyney show case i wanna se some one experienced that i know if i was to go to the theater i could enjoy watching not like omg this is awful well we just have to wait an see lets see if she can nail the role

I’m sure this book will be a huge success as a film, its just a case of picking a great cast. Ideally I’d like for completely new actors to be used for the film as a way of giving new up and coming talent the chance to shine.
