Stieg Larsson confidant reveals details about unpublished fourth 'Millennium' novel

Kurdo Baksi, a friend of the late Stieg Larsson, has come forward with new details about the fourth book in the wildly popular Millennium series. Baksi told the Swedish newspaper the Expressen that Camilla, the estranged sister of punk techno-genius Lisbeth Salander, will play a large role in the intended fourth installment. To date, Camilla has only made a brief appearance in the second book of the series, The Girl who Played with Fire. Baksi also revealed that Larsson had plans to send Lisbeth to Greenland, although he is not sure in which remaining book in the series — Larsson had envisioned five parts — this would occur. Larsson and Baksi became close while they worked on the Swedish anti-racism magazine and foundation Expo.

Last July, another close friend of Larsson’s, John-Henri Holmberg, told the AP that he received an email from Larsson shortly before his death in 2004 describing the setting of the fourth novel; apparently, Lisbeth Salander will be jetting off to Banks Island, a remote area of northern Canada. In the e-mail, Larsson estimated the page count and described his interest in the location. “The plot is set 120 kilometres north of Sachs Harbour, at Banks Island in the month of September,” Larsson wrote in the email. “According to the synopsis it should be 440 pages. Did you know that 134 people live in Sachs Harbour, whose only contact with the world is a postal plane twice a week when the weather permits? But there are 48,000 musk-ox and 80 different types of wild flowers that bloom during two weeks in early July, as well as an estimated 1,500 polar bears.”

Unfortunately for fans and publishers around the world, these tidbits may be all we see of the fourth Millenium novel for some time. In her memoir Stieg and I, Larsson’s partner Eva Gabrielsson has claimed to have 200 pages of the manuscrip t– working title God’s Revenge – in a file on a computer that she owns. Gabrielsson is currently locked in a bitter dispute over Larsson’s estate with his surviving family members, and she has vowed that the pages will never be published as long as they remain in her possession. Currently, there are no plans by any publishers around the world to publish a fourth book.

The Hollywood version of the first installment of the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, hits theaters December 21st of this year.

What a shame it all ended up this way.

I thought the third book was a fitting ending to the series.

    • Roda Lerpold

      I agree!

Don’t publish it. I can’t think of a single case when a posthumous manuscript “completed” by a different person has been any good. Stop grubbing for more money, and let the Millennium Trilogy stay just that.

The Wheel of Time series. The books written by Brandon Sanderson after Robert Jordan’s death are arguably a lot better than the last few books written by Jordan.

I realize this is a bit nerdy, but Mozart’s Requiem Mass was completed by his students after his death (and NOT by Antonio Salieri!).

The last Wheel of Time book by Brandon Sanderson. Thank god someone was able to take on Robert Jordan’s legacy so succesfully.

I wanted a fourth book.. I felt that Steig was dropping hints about re-introducing Lisbeth’s sister eventually.

however, i don’t want a ghost writer finishing it. leave it at three if thats all we can get.

Larsson’s domestic partner helped him with the 3 books. I’ve heard that in Sweden there are people who speculate that he framed the series and she wrote the books.

Use a Ouija board and get him to finish it that way.

That’s hilarious! what a great idea!!

Yeah, they should really leave the trilogy alone, but of course it will probably eventually come out sometime, so I can only hope it will be decent. By the way, I have heard seemingly endless speculation on how many parts this series was supposed to have; People have claimed their was only one more part, and now that friend is saying 5, and I have heard even more speculation on parts from people closest to him; which is it? We will never know for sure I guess.

I would not object to another segment to this wonderful series. However, I am NOT planning to view the Hollywood “version” of any of the first 3 novels.

When I finished Hornets Nest, the first question that came to mind was, ‘What about Camilla?’ This author was too careful about tying up loose ends to leave hanging one as big as Lisbeth’s twin. Of course it wouldn’t be the same if it has to be co-authored, especially in translation, but I’d really like to see these characters finish up the very long story arcs.

I feel his domestic partner got screwed royally by his brother/father; the irony is that’s what his books were about: the power of men over women. I think his family should be ashamed to take any money from those books. I would rather forgo a fourth book then let them make any more money. For all practical purposes, she was his wife. In this country that would have been recognized.

Greed will try to perpetuate Larrson’s writing by people who couldn’t write it if they wanted to. The trilogy is done and very complete! Let Steig rest in peace.

  • Mel

I would love to see what he was planning. Maybe an outline? But I’m not sure if I want the actual book. It might not have the same feel as the trilogy. I’ll take what I can get, I guess.
