After all those nautically themed ballads, Colin Meloy, the lead singer and songwriter of the band The Decemberists, has written a novel. His literary debut, Wildwood, is a middle-grade fantasy (middle-grade is publisher-speak for Young Young Adult) set in an alternate-reality version of Meloy’s hometown, Portland, Ore., in which adventure and magic have replaced flannel and independent coffee houses. Take a look at the exclusive cover reveal below.
It’s got a cool, Wes Anderson-y feel to it that make me think it’d be perfect for any twelve-year-old with an ironic mustache.

Love Meloy as a songwriter, so I’m very curious to check this out. Wish him all the best.
His sister is an acclaimed fiction writer so maybe the talent runs in the family.
love Carson Ellis’s art!
Meloy’s home town is Helena Montana, not Portland Oregon as the article says.
true, but i think they’re generalizing about where his band is based.
This sounds interesting, I like the cover. I would give this a chance.
I think my age categorizes me as just plain ‘young adult’ but it looks really interesting so I will be sure to check it out. besides i love children’s books
As a 60+ young adult, I read a lot of young fiction and I am looking forward to this one. I love the Decemberists, and so does my 87 year old mom.
Earth is for dead learners. Those gluttoness blackbirds fearing starvation and winter stuffed their bellies so full until they could no longer fly!!
