Sweet Valley High Sequel: What I'd Love to See

Brush off your Droids cassette and put on your lavalieres – the Wakefield twins are back. And I don’t mean in Diablo Cody’s movie adaptation of the series.

No, according to  St. Martin’s, Sweet Valley High‘s Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield – the identical twins with blonde hair, eyes the color of the Pacific Ocean and “perfect size six” figures – will return to bookstores, possibly as soon as early next year, in Sweet Valley Confidential, a book chronicling their lives as twenty-somethings.

Rumors have swirled for years that SVH creator Francine Pascal was working on a book focusing on the twins and their friends several years out of high school. Late last month, the SVH world went into a frenzy when an editorial assistant at St. Martin’s confirmed the existence of the novel, giving  Shannon’s Sweet Valley Blog a tentative publishing date of February 2011. While there is no word yet on what characters will appear in the book, there is a plethora to choose from. I think it’s safe to say that Lila Fowler, Jessica’s rich frenemy and my personal favorite, will make an appearance, as will Porsche-driving Bruce Patman and Elizabeth’s moody on-again off-again boyfriend Todd Wilkins. Continuity has never been one of Sweet Valley’s strong points, so I won’t really mind if the book pretends Sweet Valley Senior Year and Sweet Valley University never happened, focuses on just SVH characters, and retains the same fabulous campy quality as the original series.

So, what plots/characters would you like to see in Sweet Valley Confidential? Are there any other YA series that need to reappear with the characters grown up?

I think it would be awesome if they brought back Winston Egbert The nerd/class clown and made him popular in college (maybe a crush for Jessica? Bittersweet when he doesn’t choose her)

    • Nerwen Aldarion

OMG I LOVED him!!! Didn’t he fall in love with Enid?

      • Ellie

he was popular in college =) he was dating Denise in Jessicas sorority and actually lived with the all the girls due to some computer glitch. (just finished the university books)

Remember the Elizabeth moved to London series, aptly entitled ‘Elizabeth’? Oh youth…

    • Jane

What?! Where can I find these books?!

      • chantal

        i LOVED those ones!!

Another series? That’s a no-brainer: the other long-running classic, The Babysitters Club. But back to SVH…IMO, take it right from the original series. I read SVH in the 1980s and was way too old when the Senior Year books came out (although I did dip into the University ones). So I have no idea how far off track those got. But it’s the original series that is the classic, the one most people remember. I can’t believe this is finally being released after so many years of rumors.

The BSC IS having new books published! – but unfortunately it will be a prequel, not a sequel. I’m planning on having kids really fast so I have an excuse to read them again! ; )

      • Heat

They are actually publishing one prequel to the BSC, and then rereleasing the first 4 books with updates-getting rid of references to tapedecks and perms!

  • Nerwen Aldarion

As much as I LOVED SVH, I’m probably going to skip this series. SVH was a book I read when I was in junior high, now that I’m an adult my taste has matured as well.

(But I still want them to get Elizabeth and Todd married! Come on it has been years for goodness sakes!)

I want Elizabeth and Todd to get married too.

I can’t believe I read these as a kid and my parents still never picked up I was major GAY!

  • Yogi

Loved these books as a kid. I remember getting lost in the stories and wishing I was a part of the Sweet Valley gang!

  • Kristen

LOL at David’s comment. I admit, if I saw this at a bookstore, I would at least read a few chapters of it at the store. :D

I hope the writer takes this as an opportunity to pretend that Sweet Valley Senior Year and University never happened!!!! I loved reading these books growing up. Hopefully, they will stick to size 6 and not change it to size 4 like the new editions did. I would love to see Ken back!

I am in my early 30s and I totally read the SVH series when I was a kid. I also hope that Todd and Elizabeth are married. Also, I would like to see what happened to Steven Wakefield, who was Jessica and Elizabeth’s brother.

  • Jenn

I’d love to read grown-up versions of the kids from the Fudge and Ramona Quimby books, but I don’t think those are YA =/

  • M

Tom Watts, though he’s SVU. I had a thing for him until he turned out to be a complete jerk. Oh, youthful, fourteen-year-old fantasies…

Would really like to see Enid. Perhaps a gay person or two to spice up the otherwise perfect Sweet Valley? Titallating reading, right there.

I painted my bedroom purple — lilac, specifically — when I was ten because of the Unicorns. Oh god.

YA series I would like to see brought back… Hm. I don’t think it’s YA, as I read them when I was seven or so, but the Anastasia On Her Own series. I think that’s what it’s called. Protagonist was Anastasia Krupnik or somesuch.

They’re reprinting Animorphs, so I’m all set.

    • Em

Reprinting Animorphs!?!? I’ll have to buy those for my nephew. Uh yeah, my nephew.

    • tamby

      I loved the Anastasia books!!

      • Katie

        I did, too!

  • Emily

If you’re a Lila fan, Catherine, you should come hang out with us at 1bruce1 (http://community.livejournal.com/1bruce1/ ). We are all about Lila!

I agree with you about getting rid of SV Senior year but I would miss SVU!

  • Cydney

I fully support forgetting that the Senior Year series ever happened. I think some of the SVU books did have some memorable and worthwhile events, like Jessica’s brief marriage and Elizabeth and Todd’s breakup. After the first few SVU installations, though, they really seemed to lose their way.

  • Jen

Elizabeth and Todd better be together. I’m still crushed that she didn’t lose her virginity to him. Other characters I want to hear about are Steven, Lila, Bruce, Winston, Amy, Aaron Dallas, Ken Matthews…As long as they stay true to the twins’ personalities and stay as close to the original series’ as possible, I’ll be happy to add this book to my completed Sweet Valley collection :)

  • Emily

I have a number of my middle school students hooked on the reissues and I know that there is an audience for more. I think that I read every single one of the originals when I was young! I have a student who asks me once a week if there are more Sweet Valley books for me to buy! I’d probably have to read at least one of the SVC series.
