Apple has revealed the first steps in its iPlan for stepping into the world of digital publishing. Read the full post.
We are witnessing the beginning of the future of computers. It may be difficult for some people to move away from laptops and home-computers simply because its “what they know”. However, just like with the iPod, as younger generations grow up with tablet devices like iPad, it becomes “what THEY know” or second nature to them. This is going to be HUGE!
Remains to be seen. Not sure about the lack of a physical keyboard. This is why Blackberries still proliferate even with the iPhone in existence.
this is nothing more than an over sized iPod touch. thats it. Netbooks have 10 times the storage and quadruple the processing power for $200 less. Not to mention they close so the screen wont get scratched up. this is a ridiculous product. I was looking forward to it, but Apple really dropped the ball.
As someone who travels for long periods of time – this is a dream come true. Instead of lugging my laptop and 3-4 books on each trip, I could bring one small, LIGHT tablet. It could hold my books, movies and tv shows…I could check my email and web browse at airports. It’s perfect for someone like me. It’s also perfect for my 11 year old kid. 10 hours of battery life? Games and movies? Can’t wait for our next roadtrip.
I do believe that we ar coming full circle in the computer world. Where once we all had workstations connected to a mainframe, we moved to individual workstations, then desktops, then laptops. With the ease of online storage and wifi, I think we will move away from carrying our harddrive everywhere we go. This ipad could be the solution.
You can already download Sony’s eReader software onto your laptop, download books (from libraries or purchased), and read them on your laptop without spending a ridiculous amount of money for a giant iPod Touch.
I’m sticking with my actual books. I was going to say that this might be nice if I traveled more, but I don’t actually believe that – when I spent 3 months in Greece, I took about 5 books and happily lugged them (and 19 more) home. I like having books, I like holding books, I like turning actual pages.
I am all for technology, i grew up with computers and cell phones (i am only 18) but i cannot wrap my head around reading a book from a screen. Part of the magic of books is the paper and the look and the smell of the pages. I cannot image losing all that to read a book on a computer screen!
I have a nook, and i have read more books in the past month than i did all of last year…and im a bookstore manager.
I love apple, i have an iphone, ipod, and a macbook. this ipad isn’t offering me anything that i can’t get from all of those combined. when the iphone came out, i NEEDED it because there was NOTHING else out there like it. even if i didn’t already own an ereader, i wouldn’t buy the ipad for the purpose of reading. its backlit, who wants to read a whole novel off a computer screen.
When considering the e-book capability my only concern is that there will not be as wide a selection of books to choose from when comparing to the Kindle. I thought I read somewhere that bestsellers would be available. Great, but what about people like myself who want something not on the listed/offered titles.
I don’t know, I love my laptop and my Kindle…I think I’d rather carry around two items that work great than simply one item that is a watered-down version of each. Also, what is internet connectivity like with the iPad? At least with Kindle I can connect to download a book whenever and wherever for free.
Also, iPad can’t run ALL iPhone applications as it doesn’t have a camera…though I wish it did as Skype would probably be pretty sweet with the iPad.
From what I Hear the kindles are better for your eyes. The page looks like…paper. The Ipad uses backlight and its like looking at a computer screen. Hurts the eyes.
I’m excited about the iPad, but just like the iPhone and the iTouch, the smart people will be the ones waiting for the second (and less-buggy) gen. I’m hoping that the second gen will have a USB to hook a disc drive or add USB memory to. I’m so tempted to get in line for this one, but I’ve learned that patience is the iVirtue.
What about the size in comparison with the size of a book. Is it easy to hold it when you are reading?
Here’s why I like this product: I don’t NEED it to be a phone; I don’t NEED it to be a camera. I have ones that I love (and not the iphone–I like a phone to feel like a phone next to my ear and not a brick). I can take it to bed and read the paper easily, read books, check email, take it to work and use it as my calendar, write notes, ec. All this and not go blind because the screen isn’t so infinitely small…and all this without having to fire up my laptop. Reading with the laptop in bed is just not that much fun. And this is better than the kindle because you can actually read a newspaper easily on it (the kindle interphase of this is quite clunky and not intuitive). So for me, the ipad fills all my needs. I am waiting for laptops and computer programs to have the touch functionality (can’t wait and hope one day to use Photoshop in this way).
I LOVE the new IPad. It is awesome. The picture viewing, FAST internet, and the apps are better than a netbook. It is easy to read books on, and the fun games. WOW. Thank you Apple for bringing this to the masses.
I had just bought my new iPad 3G home from the Apple store, and played around with it for a few hours before I realised something. I was bored. It definitely had some cool features and everything, but all the multimedia I wanted to put on it from the App store and the iBookstore would cost me loads, and I simply couldn’t afford to spend $12 per book. I realised that without this multimedia, I simply couldn’t enjoy my Apple iPad to the fullest extent.
Then, after some Google searching, I discovered http://www.myPad-Media.info It’s this new site which provides thousands of books, comic books, newspapers, games and more for the iPad.
reading a book is different than reading a computer. the idea is a realistic book reading experience..
