Late last night, Oprah Winfrey tweeted that she will be announcing her new Book Club selection on Friday, Sept. 18 and that she’s “never made a selection like ‘this’.” Ron Hogan at MediaBistro’s GalleyCat blog has already begun snooping on Amazon and BN.com to guess the title based on his knowledge of the publisher (Little, Brown) and the suggested retail prices ($23.99 in hardcover and $14.99 in trade paperback). His best guesses: James Collins’ 2008 debut novel Beginner’s Greek and Uwem Akpan’s remarkable 2008 story collection Say You’re One of Them (which EW’s Jennifer Reese ranked the best fiction title of last year). Akpan, a Nigerian-born priest who writes eloquently and movingly about the harrowing effects of AIDS and genocide on Africa, would seem to be a perfect author for Winfrey given her long-standing interest in the continent. (She has opened two schools for South African youth.) One thing’s for sure: The folks at Little, Brown, which is anomalously flush as the publisher of Stephenie Meyer, must be very happy campers.

There’s no way it’s Beginner’s Greek. Of all the fiction I’ve read in the past year, that was the only book that I read the first 50 pages and never picked up again. I usually like Oprah’s picks – Pillars of the Earth, Middlesex, and Edgar Sawtelle were alll good picks.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if it was Kathy Griffin’s new book. That would certainly be unexpected…
that would be amazing!!
I’ve lost faith in Oprah’s book club picks. The only reason I read A Million Little Pieces was because she raved about how good it was. I couldn’t even finish it.
“Never made a selection like this”, eh? Clearly that means…Mike Mignola’s Hellboy: The Right Hand of Doom! I mean, it’s funny, serious, explores interpersonal relationships, and is a first-rate redemption story – the middle-aged moms will LOVE it! Great pictures, too!
Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin
How does he know who the publisher is?
Say You’re One of them by Uwem Akpan
I bet it will be Say You’re One of them by Uwem Akp
this is interesting. She has such a large following. We are all on pins and needles wondering what her book is? How about a soultion to health care and the money crisis. I will buy her book selection when I can afford health insurance.
If it’s either Beginner’s Greek or Say You’re One of Them, my prediction is for the latter title. I’m nearly finished with Beginner’s Greek which was on her recommended summer reading list in one of last summer’s issues and it’s a good chick lit read, but it doesn’t really seem to be the kind of book an Oprah’s Book Club pick usually is. It’s not literature and it doesn’t center on seriously dysfunctional families.
C’mon, Oprah! Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin. You know it was meant to be!
C’mon, Oprah! Kathy Griffin’s Official Book Club Selection would be so much fun. She’s made it easy by helpfully choosing that title.
Official Book Club Selection: A Memoir According to Kathy Griffin. I echo the thoughts of my brilliant coposters.
Just posted about Oprah’s book club on my blog too and made a poll cos I’m curious to get an idea of the percentage of readers who follow it regularly and how many of those like or dislike her pics. Please cast your vote
