This week’s smartest, grisliest mainstream comic book is the first issue of Blackest Night: Superman. It’s part of the Blackest Night miniseries I wrote about a few weeks ago centering around Green Lantern, but in the Superman edition, writer James Robinson has the Man of Steel, infected by this miniseries’ Black Lantern, turn into a kind of zombie-Superman, a bizarre (as opposed to Bizarro), back-from-the-dead-and-angry Superman who digs up the grave of his own father, among other very bad things. Even Krypto the Super-Dog gets hurt in this issue.
Really, these Blackest Night titles (last week’s Blackest Night: Batman was a good ‘un, too) combine the best elements of both superhero comics and horror comics, along with some fine storytelling by Robinson, Peter Tomasi, and the miniseries’ guiding force, Geoff Johns. You don’t have to be a hardcore, know-every-detail-of-the-mythology fan to hop on this train. Check them out.

Interesting albiet wierd. Then again There was a comic a few years ago with Supes teaming up with Batman against a vampire, and Red Rein (Batman vs Dracula) so why not zombies?
Wow, this is so totally off-base and ill-informed. It’s not even the “real” Superman, but rather one from Earth-2 who died a few years in Infinite Crisis. I love that Blackest Night is getting mention but at least get your facts right please.
I think this miniseries is why Smallville is doing that zombie episode called “Rabid” as their 3rd episode this year. Not sure how I feel about it but I guess it’s in right now.
That’s not actually Superman. It’s an old version of Superman from another dimension who died years ago.
Actually it was Lois who hurt Krypto.
Did the writer of the article even read “blackest night, superman”?
It’s Kal-L, from Earth-2.
I watched a video that has a similar storyline complete with Superman as a zombie idea. I wonder if it has any other similarities, here is the link.

WTF really? Did the writer even read the comic or did he just skim through and pick out good images? And to those of you who have not read any of this series (pick up the books) these are not “rrr braaaaiins” Zombies they are horrifying and down right evil creatures back from the dead who are building up to something so check it out.
That is the ‘real’ Superman, the first one who worked for the Daily Star under editor George Taylor. Sheeeesshhh!!!
Really, if you are going to review a comic, could you please read it first?
To chris I think wat the previous poster meant was superman that is in current books
While the review is a bit misleading, this was a great issue. Kal-L is one scary dude as a Black Lantern.
Zombies!! i can’t wait for the Max Brooks graphic novel. it’s going to be amazing..
You think that’s weird? Read the “What if?” Story where Wolverine becomes King of the Vampires and has to get double teamed by Doctor Strange and the Punisher (weirdest combo ever?) to get taken out.
