'Underwater Dogs' sequel 'Underwater Puppies' splashing your way soon -- PHOTO

One of the most popular books of the Holiday season was Underwater Dogs, the brilliant photo book by Seth Casteel that captured submerged dogs looking primal, ferocious, adorable, or downright weird in their watery surroundings. It changed the way we looked at our pets. Now, like a lot of fashion photographers, Casteel will move on to younger, cuter models. Underwater Puppies will come paddling your way in 2014 and will feature “man’s best friends at their most playful and exuberant,” according to a press release.

Coming sooner is Underwater Doggies (Sept. 2013), a version for children, which pairs new and favorite Casteel photos with rhyming verse.

'Underwater Dogs': See 10 cute/ferocious photos!

When you throw a tennis ball into the swimming pool for your dog to fetch, you never get to see what your dog is up to below the surface. In Underwater Dogs (out today), a book of 89 portraits of diving canines, photographer Seth Casteel has captured the “chaotic ballet of bared teeth and bubbles, paddling paws, fur and ears billowing in the currents.”

Not all of these photos are cute. Some of the submerged models are hardly recognizable as dogs — they look like predatory sea monsters, and some are almost dinosaur-like. But the gorgeous, energetic snapshots are special in that they capture our pets in a primal state we rarely get to see.
