Neil Patrick Harris: 2014 was the year I started a new chapter -- then wrote a book

CHOOSE-YOUR-AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The hardest-working man in showbiz? It’s still Neil Patrick Harris, who spent his 2014 wrapping up How I Met Your Mother, starring in a pair of movies, playing eight shows a week on Broadway, releasing a memoir… in fact, just about the one thing he didn’t do was decide to take over for David Letterman. Why? Because he was worried he’d get bored hosting a nightly show.

Here, Harris tells EW about one of his busiest years yet—and prepping for a jam-packed 2015. (Hello, Oscars.)

This last year has been the most glorious of clusterf–ks. I was finishing How I Met Your Mother, in rehearsals to perform Hedwig and the Angry Inch on Broadway, and filming back-to-back feature films. I remember one day where, after rehearsal as ladies man Barney Stinson on HIMYM, I quickly drove across town to put on high-heeled boots to rehearse in a totally new physicality for Hedwig, then headed back across town to do some looping for the western A Million Ways to Die in the West, and then went to a table read for the thriller Gone Girl.

With the series ending, and all these overlapping gigs—things I simply couldn’t pass up—as well as a bunch of new things on the horizon, it was a bit like juggling. Juggling a bowling ball, a tennis racket, a kitten, and a
chain saw. READ FULL STORY

Watch Neil Patrick Harris take shots and do magic in his book trailer

Neil Patrick Harris has chosen to frame his memoir as a Choose Your Own Adventure book, and the new book trailer adheres to that same spirit, allowing viewers to choose what they want to see the multihyphenate star doing. Well, it’s not quite that interactive. Instead, you can watch little Neils simultaneously juggle, do his Hedwig and the Angry Inch vocal warm-ups, perform magic tricks, eat saltines, or take shots of “pure rubbing alcohol.” The most adorable option is obviously watching Harris and his husband, David Burtka, reenact the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp.

The memoir, titled Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography, is described as a “revolutionary, Joycean experiment in light celebrity narrative, actor/personality/carbon-based life-form Neil Patrick Harris lets you, the reader, live his life.” Or, as Harris explains in the trailer, “throughout the book, at random times, you’ll get to choose what happens to you next.”

On The Books: BookExpo to feature Neil Patrick Harris, Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler

The annual publishing convention BookExpo America began Wednesday at New York City’s Javits Convention Center. The four-day-long event will feature appearances from Neil Patrick Harris, Lena Dunham, and Amy Poehler, all of whom are promoting their forthcoming memoirs: Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography (Oct. 14), Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl (Oct. 7), and Poehler’s Yes Please (Oct. 28); other events include previews and discussions of film adaptations. EW’s YA expert Sara Vilokmerson is moderating The Fault in Our Stars event with author John Green and director Josh Boone, and EW’s Anthony Breznican  is moderating the This Is Where I Leave You panel with author Jonathan Tropper and actors Tina Fey and Jason Bateman. In addition to these star-studded events, the first-ever BookCon, modeled on ComicCon, will take place on the final day of BookExpo – organizers expect as many as 10,000 readers to attend. We can expect that the ongoing battle between Amazon and Hachette books will be a topic of discussion during BookExpo. [USA Today] READ FULL STORY

Neil Patrick Harris wrote a Choose Your Own Adventure-style memoir

In hindsight, readers shouldn’t be surprised that Neil Patrick Harris’ autobiography isn’t going to be the typical celebrity memoir. Still, a Choose Your Own Adventure-style tale is a fun surprise from the guy behind Barney Stinson, Dr. Horrible, and  — sorry Hugh Jackman — the best Tonys opener of all time.

Here’s the just-released book description: “In this revolutionary, Joycean experiment in light celebrity narrative, actor/personality/carbon-based life-form Neil Patrick Harris lets you, the reader, live his life. You will be born in New Mexico. You will get your big break at an acting camp. You will get into a bizarre confrontation outside a nightclub with actor Scott Caan. Even better, at each critical juncture of your life you will choose how to proceed. You will decide whether to try out for Doogie Howser, M.D. You will decide whether to spend years struggling with your sexuality. You will decide what kind of caviar you want to eat on board Elton John’s yacht. Choose correctly and you’ll find fame, fortune, and true love. Choose incorrectly and you’ll find misery, heartbreak, and a guest stint on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.”

No word on if you get to choose to get naked on the cover of Rolling Stone. Neil Patrick Harris: Choose Your Own Autobiography! will be available Oct. 14, 2014.
