'Daughter of Smoke and Bone' sequel cover -- EXCLUSIVE

BLOOD-STARLIGHT

Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone — the first novel in a trilogy — centered on a blue-haired girl named Karou who encounters unusual creatures and dangerous angels as she travels the world on mysterious errands.

Now the sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight, is slated for a Nov. 6 release. It picks up where the best-selling Daughter left off. From the official description: “In this stunning sequel to Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.”

Judging from Daughter of Smoke and Bone — which EW’s Sara Vilkomerson called a “smartly plotted, surprising, and fiercely compelling read” — the sequel is well worth getting excited about. Check out a larger version of the brand new cover below! READ FULL STORY »

Check out the cover for James M. Cain's 'lost' novel 'The Cocktail Waitress' -- EXCLUSIVE

cocktail-waitress-cover

Noir thriller giant James M. Cain is, of course, the man who brought us the twist-filled delights of Double Indemnity, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and Mildred Pierce. Cain died 35 years ago but it turns out that the novelist still has one more surprise up his sleeve. This September, Titan books will publish a “lost final novel” by the author called The Cocktail Waitress. According to Titan, the book concerns a young, beautiful widow who “takes a job as a waitress in a cocktail lounge, where she meets two new men: a handsome young schemer she falls in love with, and a wealthy older man she marries.”

Mmm, sounds like classic Cain territory. Certainly the cover of The Cocktail Waitress gives off an appropriately noir-ish scent with its combination of alcohol, cigarettes, and, naturally, sex. You can take an exclusive look at that cover to the left and, in larger format, below.

Pour yourself a martini, check it out, and tell us what you think. READ FULL STORY »

'Matched' trilogy by Ally Condie: See the cover and title for the third and final book! Plus, Condie answers burning questions -- EXCLUSIVE

Ally-Condie

The beautiful covers of Ally Condie’s best-selling Matched books follow a simple progression that reflects the progression of the series. Our heroine Cassia started off on the first cover existing serenely in a glass orb, symbolizing her blissful unawareness of the Society’s oppression. Then on the cover of Crossed, she put her fist through the glass. You’ll have to scroll to the bottom to see what happens next to Cassia’s little color-shifting snow globe.

In addition to giving us the lovely cover, Condie took the time to answer some burning questions about book 3.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: There was a huge, huge bomb dropped about Xander in Crossed. Any chance at redemption in the final book?
ALLY CONDIE: Absolutely. There is always a chance at redemption until the last page…and sometimes even after that!

Whose point of view will we be getting this time? Are you switching it up again?
I am switching it up again, because it’s time for Xander to get to share his story as well. So there are three points of view — Cassia’s, Ky’s, and Xander’s — telling this final installment of the trilogy.

There are still so many mysteries about the Society and the Rising. Will all our questions be answered?
Many of the biggest questions will be answered in this book — but I don’t dare say that they ALL will. But you will certainly find out more about the state of the Society, and what the Rising really is, and what that means for the main characters.

What did it feel like to put a period on the trilogy?
It was both wonderful and a bit sad. Sad because I’m finished with the story for now, and because I will miss these characters and this world. But it also felt very good to write scenes that I’ve pictured writing for several years now (since I began Matched) and to see Cassia, Ky, and Xander all the way through to the finish.

What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on the final revisions for this final book. But I also have an idea for another novel to begin after I’m finished with revisions.  I’m very excited about the concept and the world and characters. It will be fun to explore something and somewhere new!

Any updates on the movie adaptation?
We are hoping to see a screenplay soon. I can’t wait!

Will you ever return to writing about the Society?
Right now I’m excited about my new idea (and several others), but I would never say never! Cassia, Ky, and Xander’s stories do feel finished to me–not that other things can’t happen to them, but those stories will play out off the page and in the readers’ minds. The books belong to them now.

Popular young-adult author Ned Vizzini, who wrote It’s Kind of a Funny Story — adapted into a film starring Zach Galifianakis, Emma Roberts, and Oscar nominee Viola Davis — has written another novel about an unusual, complicated teen. The Other Normals (out Sept. 25) centers on 15-year-old Peregrine “Perry” Eckert, who’s seriously obsessed with an uber-dorky role-playing game called Creatures & Caverns. Concerned about his stunted social skills and need for fresh air, Perry’s parents decide to ship him off to summer camp to become a man. He anticipates the worst summer of his life until he arrives at camp and stumbles into the World of the Other Normals, a place where his nerdy childhood may serve him well — but not without connecting with the real world first. Take a look at the cover below! READ FULL STORY »

See the cover of Ellen Hopkins' teen novel, 'Tilt' -- EXCLUSIVE

Are there truly always two sides to every story? New York Times best-selling author Ellen Hopkins seems to think so.

In her upcoming YA novel Tilt (out Sept. 11) Hopkins takes the interwoven lives of three mothers from her adult novel Triangles and tells their stories from another point of view: their children’s. The free verse narrative follows three teens, Mikayla, Shane, and Harley, as they navigate first loves, friendships, and their parents’ meltdowns.

For fans of Hopkins’ books, EW has the first look at Tilt! Check out the cover below: READ FULL STORY »

'Snow White and the Huntsman' novelization cover reveal -- EXCLUSIVE

In a kind of reverse-adaptation, Snow White and the Huntsman, the second of two major Snow White movies this year, will be getting a novelization by Lily Blake on Apr. 17 leading into the film’s June 1 release. The book cover — a repackaged version of one of the film posters — features Kristen Stewart as a knife-wielding warrior princess who couldn’t be more different from the fluttering damsel from the 1937 Disney film or the wide-eyed ingenue from the upcoming Lily Collins-starrer Mirror, Mirror. Chris Colfer's children's book 'The Land of Stories' gets a cover and an earlier release date! -- EXCLUSIVE

Chris-Colfer

Gleeks already know that Chris Colfer can take us to magical places with his voice, and now he’s using words and pictures to create a fantasy world in his upcoming children’s book The Land of Stories, illustrated by Brandon Dorman. Kurt fans who’ve been anxiously awaiting the book, originally slated for an Aug. 7 release, won’t have to wait as long as they’d thought. A rep for Little Brown said, “Chris’s writing talents, his efficiency with deadlines, and the eagerness from his fans has all combined to allow us to move the date up to July 17th!”

Described as a “modern-day fairy tale,” the book will focus on twins Alex and Conner, who leave the real world behind and find themselves in a land where they come face-to-face with the fairy-tale characters — witches, goblins, trolls — they’ve always read about. Colfer says the book’s illustrator “made every detail come to life. He went above and beyond the crayon and colored pencil drawings I used to make of it as a kid.” Check out the very first peek at the cover of The Land of Stories below!
