'Hello, Cupcake' authors Karen Tack and Alan Richardson preview treats from upcoming book

Cupcakes-Cookies-Pie-Oh-My

Even though their forthcoming book Cupcakes, Cookies, & Pie, Oh, My! extends their special creative style to all types of desserts, Karen Tack and Alan Richardson still refer to their practice as the catch-all “cupcaking.”

“We just decided to take the whole decorative approach and put it on everything,” Richardson said during a hands-on demo in New York City on Thursday.

The new book — third in the 20-year-strong duo’s sweet-tooth series that includes the bestselling Hello, Cupcake and What’s New, Cupcake? — won’t hit shelves until January, but many of the new creations were on display Thursday. Richardson seemed particularly excited about READ FULL STORY »

'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' author Jeff Kinney on new book 'Cabin Fever' and the series' future

diary_wimpy_kid

UPDATE: Read our review of Cabin Fever.

Cabin Fever, the highly anticipated sixth installment of the Diary of the Wimpy Kid series, will get a monster first-run release of six million copies on Nov. 15, the largest of any book in the series. Series creator and author Jeff Kinney spoke to EW about the new book and Greg Heffley’s future — apparently love and death are on the horizon.

Tell me a bit more about the concept behind the sixth book.
On the surface, Cabin Fever is about the Heffley being family being snowed in for the holidays and the claustrophobia that creates, but it works as a theme as well. The idea behind the book is that as you’re growing up you’re forging your identity, and that identity becomes hard to escape later on. I find that no matter what I do in my professional life, if I go back home, the people I grew up with and the people in my family and the people who know me bring me back to my true self. Part of the book is about the claustrophobia of your identity — it’s hard to forge a new one. READ FULL STORY »

Steve-O from 'Jackass' has written a book. In ink, no less! Check out the cover.

Professional-Idiot_

Great memoirs often come from people who have experienced a lot of pain in their lives, which is why I expect Steve-O’s to be nothing less than brilliant. I’m hoping for something on the level of Mary Karr or Jeannette Walls, but with more exploding port-o-potties and fart machines. The book, which hits stores on June 7, is going to be called Professional Idiot and “recounts Steve-O’s glory days, drug addiction, and his path of recovery and redemption—all while maintaining the bravado and humor for which he is famous.” While I’m pretty sure that actually isn’t what he’s famous for, you have to at least be somewhat interested in the story of a man who can describe being kicked in the testicles repeatedly as “glory days.”

'The Passage' paperback cover and an exclusive excerpt from Justin Cronin's sequel

the-passageFans of Justin Cronin’s Twilight-plus-The Stand-plus-awesomely violent vampires-minus-Twilight novel The Passage rejoice: We have a double-dose of those limbs-ripping, telepathic bloodsuckers for you. First, there’s the cover for the upcoming paperback edition, which will be especially helpful for those of you who didn’t have the arm-strength to take the nearly 800-page tome along to the beach last year. As you can see, the paperback trades in the hardcover’s creepy darkened woods for something brighter and a bit more…AHH! There’s a face!! Sorry, I didn’t see that at first.

We also have an exclusive excerpt from Cronin’s in-the-works sequel The Twelve, set to release sometime in 2012. Check it out below, and for those whose curiosity is piqued by this Passage passage, a larger extract will be included in the paperback, which hits stores on May 17.

Exclusive: Molly Shannon talks about her upcoming children's book 'Tilly the Trickster' and the importance of pulling pranks

molly-shannon-bookImage Credit: Jeff Christensen/AP ImagesSNL favorite and mom of two Molly Shannon is bringing her zany, good-natured comic sensibility to her new children’s book, Tilly the Trickster (Abrams), which will be published in September 2011. Tilly is a “strong little spicy character,” in Shannon’s words, and an “imperfectly perfect role model.” We caught up with Shannon to find out how her childhood (filled with mischief and hijinks) and being a parent to her own children inspired her to write this book. Richelle Mead's new series 'Bloodlines' cover reveal -- EXCLUSIVE

BloodlinesRichelle Mead has graduated from Vampire Academy, her popular YA series that wrapped up in December with the release of its sixth and final book, and now she’s moving onto new territory. Well, somewhat new: Bloodlines will be a spin-off of VA, moving the previously tertiary character Sydney, a human alchemist, from the sidelines to the forefront. It will also be set in a sunny Californian high school instead of that rigid, preppy-bloodsucker academy, which I imagine will be like transferring from the Undead Poets Society to Bayside High. Check out the finalized cover for the first book of the series—that’s Sydney with the filigreed face, by the way—and watch a video after the jump of Mead talking about how it will differ from Vampire Academy. Bloodlines is set to hit shelves on August 23.

EW Exclusive: Cover peek for 'Where She Went,' the sequel to 'If I Stay'

Where-She-WentYoung adult author Gayle Forman’s emotional novel If I Stay hung on a teenage coma victim’s choice between sticking around on Earth and passing on to the other side. I guess the fact that Forman has written a sequel hints a bit at that book’s ultimate decision. Here’s an exclusive first look at the cover for that upcoming sequel. Where She Went will be set three years after the events of If I Stay and will focus on Mia, the protagonist, and her life amongst the living as she meets up with her former boyfriend, Adam, for the first time in years.

The first book had a lot of “will-this-be-the-next-Twilight” buzz surrounding it when it came out, and none other than Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke had been attached at one point. The movie’s still in the works and is set to start filming next year. That, combined with Where She Went’s April 4, 2011 publication date, should make it a big year for the series.

Anyone a big fan of the first book? How do you feel about a sequel? And are you digging the cover?

'The Vampire Diaries' prequel novel: An exclusive cover peek

vampire-diaries-novelWhile Damon from The Vampire Diaries is busy tearing up the polls in EW’s official Sexy Beast competition, the show’s other bloodsucking protagonist is set to get a series of prequel books named after him. HarperCollins Children’s Books and Alloy Entertainment have announced that they will be releasing Stefan’s Diaries #1: Origins, the first in a planned trilogy of novels that will shed sunlight on the vampire brothers’ long, troubled history, including the Civil War-era romance that turned them against each other. The CW series, like fellow hyper-sexualized-neckbiter show True Blood, was based on a run of novels, and although it doesn’t appear that original author L. J. Smith will be penning this new trilogy, her creations have come full circle back into book form. The first entry of Stefan’s Diaries is scheduled to hit bookstores in November.

Fans of the show, what do you think? Will you still be gripped by the characters without all the brooding, occasionally shirtless eye-candy? How about those of you who read the original books?

'The Lost Hero' exclusive! See new Rick Riordan book cover art, along with the first two chapters

The_Lost_HeroThis exclusive image of Rick Riordan’s new cover comes from up on high, tossed down from a nimbus straight into our website like one of Zeus’ jagged thunderbolts.

OK, fine, it was emailed to us by Disney, but it’s still cool, all the same. The Lost Hero is the first book in Riordan’s spin-off series, The Heroes of Olympus. The cover shows three kids flying a fire-snorting mechanical dragon over the walls of what appears to me to be the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec. I guess that’s one way to get past Canadian customs. The book will hit stores later this year, but you don’t have to wait that long to get a taste. Just go to this website, enter in the secret password newhero, and you’ll be able to read the first two chapters of The Lost Hero. And remember, I told you that password in confidence, so don’t go spreading it around. It’ll just be between you and me, Internet.

Fans of Riordan’s Olympian adventures, excited for the new series? What do you think of the first two chapters?
