Any fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer can tell you that its titular heroine has faced her fair share of trials and turmoil that forced the young woman to make some very grown up decisions. But in the latest issue of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 comic series — which chronicles Buffy’s life in San Francisco after she destroyed the seed of all magic on earth at the end of the Season 8 comic — Buffy Summers will face perhaps the toughest decision she’s ever had. SPOILER ALERT for those who would rather read about it in the issue itself, “On Your Own, Part 1,” out in stores today. Seriously, what you’re about to read is one heckuva spoiler: READ FULL STORY »

Little, Brown has announced the title and on-sale date of Lemony Snicket’s highly anticipated new series. The first volume in the four-part autobiographical account of his childhood, called All the Wrong Questions, will be released on Oct. 23, 2012. This will be Snicket’s first new series since the wildly popular A Series of Unfortunate Events. The famously cantankerous author said in a press release, “These books are questionable and contain questions. I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them.”

'Avengers vs. X-Men #1': EW Exclusive! First look at Marvel's upcoming crossover event

Filed under: Books, News and tagged:
Avengers-vs-X-Men-cover

The Avengers and the X-Men are the two predominant superteams of the Marvel Universe. They’re also at the center of two of the highest-grossing franchises of the decade — the five X-Men films have grossed $1.9 billion, while this May’s Avengers movie will bring together the successful Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America sagas into one franchise-uniting megamovie. So it’s perhaps not surprising that Marvel is pitting the two teams against each other. The sheer scope of the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men is fascinating: The 12-issue series is a group effort between popular writers (and official Marvel architects) Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction. EW has obtained an exclusive look at the first seven pages of Avengers vs. X-Men #1 — you can check out the preview by clicking here — which includes a first look at the inciting incident for the superteam chaos: The return of the Phoenix Force. Illustrated-Movie-Companion

The Gamemakers at Scholastic have bestowed upon us three new Hunger Games movie tie-ins, including the one that’s probably most interesting to fans: The Hunger Games: Official Illustrated Movie Companion. It contains detailed back story on the sensation the novels have created and the casting of the movie, which is interesting even if it’s stuff we’ve heard before — in fact, the Companion quotes pretty extensively from EW’s own coverage. But let’s be serious, the never-before-seen photos are what we’ve been waiting for! The Companion really delivers some amazing new images. For now, you’ll just have to pick up the book to see them for yourself, but I’ll tease some of the highlights below (possible spoilers ahead): READ FULL STORY »

'Portlandia: A Guide for Visitors' will take you on a tour of the weirdest city in America

Portlandia

Before you take a trip to Portlandia — the warped version of Portland, Ore., as seen on Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein’s quirky IFC series — you need to be prepared. Where can you find a good feminist bookstore? Where can you take in a riveting one-man show? Grand Central Publishing has announced that it will release Portlandia: A Guide for Visitors (Nov. 20, 2012), which will hopefully answer these questions. Says a press release: “Presented like an authentic Lonely Planet or Fodor’s travel book, Portlandia will guide readers through the city as they visit establishments and landmarks and meet the colorful residents who call Portlandia home — all with the same unique humor that brings the show to life.” I’m dying to read Yelp reviews of Around the World in 80 Plates, the restaurant where the waitstaff knows the life story of the chicken you’re about to eat. I’m also expecting a guide to the best dumpsters to dive. What vital information do you hope the Portlandia book contains?

ONCE-UPON-A-SECRET_215.jpg

Mimi Alford, a 69-year-old retired church administrator and former White House intern, is poised to share more than you probably wanted to know about John F. Kennedy. Her memoir Once Upon a Secret: My Affair With John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath (out tomorrow) details her 18-month sexual relationship with JFK, which began when she was only 19 and concluded with his assassination. Alford’s credibility and the shocking nature of her claims have fueled advance interest in the book, and tomorrow night NBC will air her interview with Meredith Vieira. EW’s official take on the book is forthcoming, but in the meantime, here are some of the raciest claims from the memoir according to an excerpt in the New York Post:

Happy 200th Birthday, Charles Dickens!

For months already, the U.K. has been gearing up to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birth today. Some might know Dickens as the author who wrote the never-ending novels we were forced to read in school, but his legacy is very much alive today for good reason — his themes of poverty, the working classes, and social injustice still resonate and made him a major pop culture celebrity in his time. You can celebrate the great author’s bicentenary by downloading and reading his classics for free from the Kindle Store. Or you can get your Dickens on in a slightly less time-consuming way by seeing the way others are celebrating the Great Expectations author:

Who should star in a movie version of 'The Fault in Our Stars'?

Shailene-Woodley

Even though John Green’s 2005 novel Looking for Alaska never got made into a movie despite a few attempts, I feel more optimistic about his new best-seller The Fault in Our Stars actually reaching the big screen. The story of two teenagers with cancer falling in love, which was optioned last week by Fox 2000, has an amazing blend of humor and tragedy. And with his massive online following and strong sales, Green’s profile has risen considerably since 2005.

I never visualized actors while reading The Fault in Our Stars, but the kids playing the leads, Hazel and Augustus, would have a huge challenge ahead of them. They’d have to be funny, capable of rapid-fire verbal sparring, and at the same time, take their performances into heavy territory without falling into melodrama. They’d have to be the sort of kids who are a bit wise beyond their years but are still into into video games and America’s Next Top Model and nihilistic Dutch authors. READ FULL STORY »

DC Comics to publish controversial 'Watchmen' prequels. Will you buy them? An EXCLUSIVE first look at artwork, creative details

Filed under: Books, News and tagged: ,
Before-Watchmen-cover

Geekdom, get ready to rumble with excitement…or grumble with outrage. Or both. In an announcement sure to ignite a firestorm of fanboy passion and pique, DC Entertainment revealed today that DC Comics will publish a collection of miniseries that will expand upon the world of Watchmen, the influential superhero saga originally released as a 12-issue maxi-series from 1986 to 1987. Marked by bravura storytelling, provocative politics, and gritty violence, Watchmen is best known for deconstructing superhero archetypes embodied by cultural icons like Superman and Batman. (You can read our 2005 oral history about the genesis, creation, and legacy of the series here.) Why might the new comics be controversial? Because Watchmen’s widely revered writer, Alan Moore, who has long been at war with DC for any number of reasons, has absolutely nothing to do with them. READ FULL STORY »
