They say no one really appreciates you until after you’re gone. Now Archie Andrews, the hero of the long-running Archie comics series, will be able to discover that first-hand: An upcoming issue of the comic will flash-forward to the future and show how Archie meets his death.

Wait, what?

For the past few years, the alternate universe “Life With Archie” comic books have illustrated a series of possible future Archie scenarios. That’s the version of the comics where Archie will finally meet his end — specifically, in issue #36, which hits stores July 16. (So don’t worry, Riverdale superfans: Archie will continue to be alive in the comics set in the present day.) The series will then conclude with comic #37, according to CNN, which has an exclusive interview with Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater (son of Archie creator John Goldwater).

“Archie dies as he lived — heroically,” Goldwater told CNN about the plot of the upcoming issue. “He dies saving the life of a friend, and does it in his usual selfless way. Archie has always been a representation of us — the best of us. Our strengths and our faults. Writer Paul Kupperberg, with input from myself, has crafted an emotional, impactful and classic story that I know will survive the test of time. This isn’t a random one-off or ‘what-if’ story that we’re doing as a gag. This is the story that we mapped out carefully and with much thought. This is the death of Archie as we see it, and we’re treating it with that same level of gravitas and import. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we are being very considerate about it.”

Poor Veronica (and Betty).
