The Virals series, written by Kathy Reichs and her son Brendan Reichs, follows the crime-solving exploits of Tory Brennan, the grand-niece of Bones heroine Temperance Brennan. Exposure, the fourth installment and latest adventure in the YA series, hits shelves March 4. And we’ve got an exclusive chapter excerpt. Check it out after the jump, and then read on for a quick chat with Kathy and Brendan.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What can you tease about Exposure?
KATHY REICHS: In Exposure, Tory and the gang are still dealing with the fallout from the final events of Code. The pack splinters for the first time, and the divide comes at a dangerous moment. Their flare powers have become wild and unstable, and Tory worries that their unique abilities might actually be dangerous.
BRENDAN REICHS: If that’s not enough, the gang discovers a kidnapping involving two Bolton Prep classmates. So, of course, they have to get involved. As they investigate, everything begins to crumble around them, and they become targets themselves.

How is Exposure different from the other books in the series?
KR: I think Exposure is the most personal book in the Virals series. Tory finally confronts some of her inner demons, as well as her more intimate feelings about the boys in her life.
BR: I think our fans will enjoy seeing more of Tory’s layers in this novel. She really opens up, and the process is painful at times. But don’t worry, the action never lets up. That’s the only way we know how to write.

What’s next in the series?
BR: Right now we’re editing the first draft of the fifth Virals book. In book five, the pack will finally get some answers about what happened to their DNA. Tory is forced to make hard decisions about her feelings for a few special gentlemen, and new characters are introduced. I can’t say more than that, but we can’t wait for our fans to see it.

Do you have plans for any more novellas?
KR: Tentative ones! We’re very happy with how well Swipe and Shift have been received. Writing a shorter work is a lot of fun, though it presents a very different set of creative challenges. Perhaps one more next winter, to make a trio?

Anything else you want to add about Exposure or the series?
KR: Writing the Virals series together has been a blast for us. We’d like to thank our fans for being so energetic, enthusiastic, and in touch. Keep the online visits coming!
BR: Not every day is a cupcake party, but it’s been a very fun experience. I’m extremely lucky to have a mentor so close to home.

Exposure comes out March 4. To see Kathy and Brendan on tour, check out their event schedule on Facebook.
