Gwyneth Paltrow's new gluten-free, sugar-free cookbook brings out the knives

Gwyneth Paltrow’s new cookbook It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great hasn’t even been published yet and it’s already getting heat.

The story goes like this: One day, Paltrow felt faint and feared she was “having a stroke.” The incident (which was actually just a panic attack) inspired her to give her diet an overhaul. She cut out coffee, alcohol, dairy, eggs, sugar, shellfish, deep-water fish, wheat, meat, and soy, as well as processed foods. Since this left her with few options for creative meals for her family (yes, Chris Martin and poor Apple and Moses also subsist on this diet), Paltrow joined forces with food writer Julia Turshen and compiled a gluten-free, sugar-free collection of 185 recipes that the actress guarantees are “not like a punishment.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Paltrow and her family don’t miss fries and ice cream. “Sometimes when my family is not eating pasta, bread, or processed grains like white rice, we’re left with that specific hunger that comes with avoiding carbs,” she admits. Still, “every single nutritionist, doctor and health-conscious person I have ever come across … seems to concur that [gluten] is tough on the system and many of us are at best intolerant of it and at worst allergic to it,” Paltrow writes.

The tough diet has come under close scrutiny, albeit not yet from the most epicurean of authorities. The New York Post describes the book as “the manifesto to some sort of creepy healthy-girl sorority with members who use beet juice rather than permanent marker to circle the ‘problem areas’ on each other’s bodies,” while the Atlantic Wire writes that It’s All Good takes “laughable Hollywood neuroticism about eating to the next level.” The London Guardian was kinder — sort of — noting that, “Yes, children do have slightly different nutritional requirements from adults … but filling their plates with empty calories in the form of white pasta, bread and rice is no nutritional kindness.”

And yet, we can’t help but feel sorry for Paltrow’s kids. A life without chocolate — that’s anything but “all good.”
