Does 'Poison' have the most ridiculous tagline ever?

Meet Kyra. She’s a 16-year-old potions master on the run after attempting to poison her kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her ex-best friend. (I know! Drama!) Now a wanted fugitive, Kyra’s only hope lies with… a pig?

“Can she save the kingdom with a piglet?” reads the cover tagline of Poison, the YA debut from the late Bridget Zinn. Ridiculous? Yes. Still, there’s something refreshing about its silliness amidst the interchangeable do-or-die taglines that seem to have become a staple for YA books these days.

For your reading pleasure, a sampling of YA taglines: “One choice can transform you,” reads the cover of Veronica Roth’s Divergent. Tahereh Mafi’s X-Men-esque novel Shatter Me? “My touch is lethal. My touch is power.” How about Veronica Rossi’s Under the Never Sky — “A million ways to die. One way to live” — or Dan Wells’ Partials: “The only hope for humanity isn’t human”?

Now, this isn’t to say that I don’t love all these books (I do), but if I knew absolutely nothing about them, I’d have a hard time picking them out of a lineup (particularly the Roth and Rossi ones — they are just begging to be mixed up). A line about a piglet on the other hand? Sure, I laughed out loud, but you can bet I’ll remember it, even if only for its sheer eccentricity. And with the amount of fantastical, dystopian, fight-to-the-death-for-your-one-true-love YA epics on the market these days, maybe embracing difference is the way to go. After all, not everything has to be about a tyranny where children battle each other in a post-apocalyptic wasteland roamed by horrible creatures while a plague runs rampant (oh, and did I mention there’s a love triangle?). Sometimes it’s just about a girl and her piglet.

I’ll be picking up a copy of Zinn’s first (and unfortunately last) novel when it hits shelves tomorrow. What about you? And while we’re at it, what are some of the craziest cover taglines you’ve ever read? Did they inspire you to pick up the book?
