New 'Bridget Jones' novel in works from Helen Fielding

Author Helen Fielding announced on U.K. radio today that the zaftig, self-deprecating, journal-writing, perennially lovelorn Bridget Jones will return for a third installment.

“The new novel is set in present-day London, with an entirely new scenario for Bridget,” Fielding said on the show Women’s Hour Friday. “If people laugh as much reading it as I am while writing it then we’ll all be very happy.”

It’s already been announced that a long-in-the-works third Bridget Jones movie is on its way, following Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, both starring Renee Zellweger, Colin Firth, and Hugh Grant. The new book, however, will not follow the upcoming movie’s plotline (which focuses on Bridget having a baby), Fielding told the show. There is also a musical in development.

In addition, the new book will have a slightly different focus, opening each chapter with Bridget’s tweets, rather than her  familiar food-and-cigarette diary entries. “It’s more like ‘number of Twitter followers: 0. Still no followers. Still no followers’,” Fielding said on the program. But don’t worry, not everything has changed: “She is still on the diet,” Fielding said.
