One Direction fanfiction story to become book

Just call it 50 Shades of Beautiful.

16-year-old U.K. teen Emily Baker is the envy of not only One Direction fans, but wannabe authors everywhere. She has just inked a deal with Penguin to publish her fanfiction story about a teen who is in an intense romantic love triangle with two of the boys from One Direction.

Much like how 50 Shades of Grey was originally a Twilight fanfiction story called “Master of the Universe,” Baker’s original story (which, since this announcement, has been scrubbed from the Internet) will have the names changed so there isn’t copyright infringement, and has been worked into a more general story about an everyday teenage girl that gets involved with members of a popular boy band.

In a press release, Penguin said they had been looking to commission a writer to pen a romantic YA novel that “tapped into the current obsession with boy bands.” At the same time, senior fiction editor Lindsey Heaven said she was browsing online youth writing community Movellas.com when her attention was drawn to Baker’s story. “We at Penguin Children’s are delighted to be publishing Loving the Band. Emily’s novel is fresh, romantic, current and completely taps into today’s pop culture. Her love of a certain boy band is heartfelt and her passion feeds into every bit of her writing.”

On Movellas.com, the story already had 30,000 obsessed fans who loved the obvious wish-fulfillment fantasy of dating their favorite singer. The U.K.’s Daily Mail has an interview with Baker, who said,The story is a typical girl-meets-boy love story, except it’s girl-meets-band. It’s about a girl who lives in Scotland and comes down to London to visit her best friend. When she gets there she bumps into a boy band and hangs out with them, and eventually she finds out two of them – Shaq and Reily – have fallen for her.”

U.K. paper The Independent has a very Twilight-esque excerpt from Loving The Band, which will be released as an e-book Nov. 1. The short preview has growls, stammering, and a woman that needs to be saved. So when you see Team Shaq and Team Reily shirts in a few years outside a movie theater, you’ll know where it all began.
