Groups lobby HarperCollins to remove 'Berenstain Bears' books from Chik-fil-A restaurants

How’s this for a book title: The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Fast Food Chicken.

Social change organizations CREDO Action, SumofUs.org, and Faithful America have gathered 80,000 signatures to urge publisher HarperCollins to take Berenstain Bears books out of Chik-fil-A restaurants after Dan Cathy, the CEO of the fast-food chain made statements opposing gay marriage. Following Cathy’s statement, the Jim Henson Company pulled its Muppets toys from Chik-fil-A’s kids meals — the petitioners are hoping HarperCollins will follow suit.

Along with the signatures, the groups delivered a copy of the book The Berenstain Bears’ New Neighbors, which contains themes of accepting people’s differences, to HarperCollins. Last week, the Berenstain family, which holds the Berenstain Bears estate after creator Jan Berenstain’s death in February, released a statement distancing itself from the promotional deal and directing all comments to HarperCollins and Chik-fil-A.

Chik-fil-A has adhered to a Christian corporate culture since its inception and has donated millions of dollars to anti-gay marriage causes for years.
