Since the end of her iconic daytime talk show last year, Oprah Winfrey’s sway in terms of TV ratings may have diminished, but it remains to be seen whether her influence on the publishing world is still intact. After a two-year hiatus, the popular Oprah’s Book Club is returning — no doubt to the relief of publishers, publicists, and booksellers everywhere. Winfrey’s first pick is Wild by Cheryl Strayed, which EW’s Melissa Maerz gave an “A” grade, calling it “a rich, riveting true story about a woman who has bottomed out emotionally and decides to do something wildly out of character — hike the Pacific Crest Trail — to get her life back on track.”
The second incarnation of the book club — called Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 — went live on June 4, and there have been some updates in response to the changing book publishing climate. Her picks will gain attention from several platforms, including the web, O, The Oprah Magazine, and the OWN network. For readers who have stuck with traditional forms of reading, physical copies of Wild bearing the Oprah’s Book Club seal of approval will land on bookstore shelves starting tomorrow. For those who prefer e-readers, there will be plenty of opportunities to engage with Winfrey’s picks in digital formats. For example, the e-book versions of the selected books will have highlighted passages and margin notes from Winfrey. Winfrey is expected to make several book picks each year.
