Kindle Fire first impressions: Entertain me!

Categories: Kindle Fire
Kindle-Fire

If I hadn’t been given one at my old job, I would not own an iPad. I’m not the kind of person who’d use a tablet to store extensive photo albums or record a song on GarageBand. Aside from iBooks, Kindle, Netflix, and Hulu Plus, my other apps — like Pages and Numbers — go completely ignored. I only use my iPad for entertainment purposes, to read and watch stuff when I’m away from my real computer, so I’m clearly wasting its full capabilities. That’s why Amazon’s cheaper Kindle Fire might be the perfect mini-tablet for a light user like me.

So far, I love using the Fire to read books. I know this puts me in the minority, but before the Fire, I actually preferred reading on my iPad to reading on my Kindle 3G, unless I was traveling. I liked downloading books on the 3G and reading them on the iPad Kindle App (the iBooks store never had enough titles) because I preferred the page-turn swipes to pressing a button, the lit screen was ideal for bedtime reading, and the pagination was clearer than on the Kindle 3G. The Kindle Fire combines the tablet reading experience and Amazon Prime’s awesome selection.

I’m also impressed with the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library. READ FULL STORY »

Jesmyn Ward on winning the National Book Award -- plus, she takes the EW Book Quiz!

Jesmyn-Ward

On Wednesday night, Jesmyn Ward joined the likes of William Faulkner and Jonathan Franzen when she won the National Book Award for fiction. Her novel, Salvage the Bones, is a searing portrait of a poor African American family living in coastal Mississippi during Hurricane Katrina. Ward took a moment to talk to EW about her big win and share some of her favorite books that inspire her as a writer.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did any part of you think you would win?
JESMYN WARD: Not at all. I did not. [Laughs] You know, I’d written an acceptance speech just in case, because I figured I had a 20 percent chance of winning, but I did not expect to win. Actually, as they were announcing the winners in each category on Wednesday night, I just kept telling myself to breathe. I was mentally preparing myself to smile and clap and be happy for whoever won, and I just knew that was not going to be me. When they read my name aloud, I don’t think it registered until my publicist grabbed me by the shoulders, said my name very loudly, and shook me. That’s when it hit me that I’d actually won. 'The Future of Us': Authors Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler talk time travel, 90's pop culture

Future-of-Us-for

Last week, we debuted the trailer for Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler’s upcoming time travel novel The Future of Us (out Nov. 21), which centers on an ingenious premise that combines 90′s nostalgia with Facebook. This superstar YA duo took a moment to chat with EW about their highly anticipated book.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you two come to join forces?
MACKLER: I was on a panel of teen novelists at the New York Public Library and someone in the audience asked what my dream project would be. In that second it hit me. “I want to write a collaborative novel,” I said. I was a big fan of Jay’s first novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, so I sent him an email and wrote, “Are you up for a semi-crazy idea?”
ASHER: I offered a quote for Carolyn’s last novel, Tangled, but other than that we didn’t personally know each other. Carolyn had been one of my favorite authors for years, so when she accepted my friend request on Facebook a few years ago, that was huge! I had no idea she’d want to co-author a book with me one day.

Where did this great idea come from? READ FULL STORY »

Sneak peek at DC's 'Superman #3': A brief history of Superman -- EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW

Categories: Comic Books, Superman

Currently, DC is offering two specific flavors of Superman. While Grant Morrison’s Action Comics presents a slightly younger (and politically motivated) Supes freshly arrived in the big city, Superman features the hero as a well-established fixture in Metropolis society. Next week’s Superman #3 provides some intriguing connective tissue between the two eras, beginning with an extended monologue that doubles as a nice revisionist history: It almost seems as if the speaker is saying that the presence of Superman has made Metropolis more dangerous, not less.

You can read the full issue when it hits stores Nov. 23. For now, check out EW’s full sneak peek here.

National Book Awards: Jesmyn Ward wins fiction prize

salvage-the-bone

Despite a major snafu last month, the 62nd National Book Awards named its winners as planned at a ceremony in New York City on Wednesday night. Jesmyn Ward won the fiction prize for her critically lauded but under-the-radar Salvage the Bones, a fierce, lyrical novel set against the tragic backdrop of Hurricane Katrina. The nonfiction honor went to Stephen Greenblatt for The Swerve: How the World Became Modern, and Nikki Finney picked up the poetry prize for Head Off & Split.

In perhaps the most fraught category this year — due to the brouhaha surrounding Lauren Myracle’s mistaken and eventually rescinded nomination — Thanhha Lai beat out the other finalists for the Young People’s literature award. Her novel centers on 10-year-old Ha, a girl whose life is forever changed when the Vietnam War ravages her hometown.

See below for a full list of winners and finalists: READ FULL STORY »

Amazon ships Kindle Fire a day early; read reviews

Categories: E-Books, Tech
Kindle-Fire

Amazon announced today that it would be shipping its best-selling new tablet, the Kindle Fire, today, one day earlier than expected. This is great news to consumers eager to get their hands on the iPad challenger.

Retailing for $199, the Kindle Fire is Amazon’s response to pricier tablets, and it’s clear they are hopeful that the mass quantity they anticipate selling will offset costs. Research firm iSuppli estimates that Amazon spends about $210 to make each Kindle Fire that it sells for $199 — a business model that can’t be sustained long-term. The affordability is the Fire’s main selling point. (That, and the Amazon name, which is already synonymous in consumers’ minds as one-stop-shopping for entertainment needs.)

The earlier release date also moves up the all-important reviews. Gizmodo has called the Kindle Fire “puzzlingly simple” and has highlighted the Amazon Prime membership as a selling point. At a time when Netflix is struggling, Prime is picking up the slack, allowing users to instantly stream everything in their Prime catalogue on the Kindle Fire. This kind of ease could spell major trouble for Apple and other tablets.

Engadget is also rather positive in their detailed review, stating that its biggest competition is still to come: The Barnes & Noble-backed Nook tablet, slated to release November 16.
