++ Chad Harbach need not apply. For those of you (okay, us) who moonlight as authors but have failed to write the Great American Novel, filmmaker and author Morgan Spurlock might be looking to tell your story — especially since you haven’t been able to do it yourself yet. Spurlock’s camp posted a casting call on Mediabistro for dreamers, including starving writers, who might be looking to switch to the much more stable profession of documentary subject. At the very least, starring in a movie will give you great material.

'Marcel the Shell with Shoes On' is back with a children's book!

Marcel the Shell, the tiny star of 2010′s cutest YouTube sensation, is expanding his media empire. The little dude, who seems alternately amazed and saddened by his own itty-bitty existence, will be releasing a children’s book, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me (out Nov. 1). He also has a television show in development, according to a Jezebel interview with creators Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp.

The best part about the Marcel the Shell video is his tentative, pipsqueak voice (performed by Slate, a former Saturday Night Live cast member), so it’s a good thing that Slate has recorded an accompanying audio version. READ FULL STORY »

William Shatner reads from 'Shatner Rules' -- EXCLUSIVE

William Shatner is famous for — among many, many other things — his distinctive, halting voice. Now you can hear him read a very honest, funny selection from his own book, Shatner Rules: Your Guide to Understanding the Shatnerverse and the World At Large, which is out today. In the below clip, he talks about aging and the fact that life in Hollywood isn’t over after 40 … or even 80, for that matter. Shatner is proof of that! READ FULL STORY »

Hot new calendar features male librarians for every month of the year

The male librarian is not as rare a specimen as you might think. In fact, there are enough of them to fill out every month of the year. With the 2012 Men of the Stacks, which is sort of the book world’s answer to sexy firemen calendars, we get photos of a diverse group of men — who also happen to be librarians — in their natural habitats, which isn’t always the library! My favorites are Mr. January (in a pose that’s very, very mildly NSFW), Mr. September, and Mr. December, who’s pictured on the right. Who’s your favorite sexy shusher?

Mindy Kaling: Her fashion blog is back! -- and it features a preview of her book

kaling

Mindy Kaling is one of my heroes.

I spent many a class in college covertly checking my phone for updates to her unabashedly fun and light-hearted shopping blog, Things I Bought That I Love (TIBTIL) and would excitedly text my friends (yeah, I was pretty cool) when there was a new post.

Unfortunately, that blog has been stagnant since Black Tuesday — April 8, 2008 … until now. With the release of her book of essays, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), out Nov. 1, Kaling has launched a brand-new brightly-colored website … with new TIBTIL updates! READ FULL STORY »

First chapters of 50 Cent's novel, 'Playground' -- EXCLUSIVE

50-Cent

Rapper and mogul Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is trying his hand at writing for teens and doing good at the same time. Jackson’s partially autobiographical novel Playground, following a troubled 13-year-old named Butterball, touches on his own experience being a former bully. As Jackson writes in the introduction — also excerpted below — one of the purposes of this book is to “show a kid who has become a bully — how and why that happened, and whether or not he can move past it.” See below for the first three chapters of Playground: READ FULL STORY »

Mark Burnett on new 'CliffsNotes' animated web series (see a VIDEO clip here)

Survivor producer Mark Burnett has teamed up with CliffsNotes, AOL, and Coalition Films to create an animated series based on classic books to make literary mainstays such as Shakespeare and Dickens more accessible to teens. Like the print versions of CliffsNotes, they’re geared to students who may either want an overview before starting a book — or, just as likely, procrastinators who haven’t read the book right before a test.

Burnett got involved in the project after seeing a need for this sort of content. “There’s no question that there’s no replacement for reading the actual books,” he told EW. “But kids do use CliffsNotes worldwide, no question about it. It amazed me that there was no digital version of these CliffsNotes.” In addition to being quick and informative, the series aims to engage its audience with humor. Burnett describes the first six Shakespeare titles the team has produced as “irreverent, animated, comedic shorts combining Shakespearean lauguage with real, modern high school and college American slang talk.” A cartoon superhero named Cliff is your guide to the videos, and he doesn’t hesitate to call you an “idiot” if you haven’t read the book yet. Pottermore delays 'Harry Potter' e-books

pottermore_website_1

For all you Harry Potter fans who can’t wait to conjure up some Hogwarts magic on your e-readers, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer. The Pottermore website — currently available to a million people using it in a trial period — will be open to everyone by the end of the month, but the online store, which will be stocking the e-books, won’t be open until the “first half of 2012.” This news might be disappointing for some, but at least the Harry Potter universe is still giving us something to anticipate, even after the book and movie series have ended. Anyway, this delay will give you plenty of time to get acquainted with your Kindle Fire before the e-books hit.
