Lauren Myracle's National Book Award nomination withdrawn -- Myracle reacts on Twitter

shine

In a truly embarrassing snafu, the National Book Foundation admitted that it incorrectly named Shine, the controversial novel by popular young adult author Lauren Myracle, as a nominee in the Young People’s Literature category last week. The debacle began on Wednesday when the NBF accidentally listed Shine instead of Chime by Franny Billingsley as a nominee. Initially, the list of nominees grew to six to include both Shine and Chime, but on Friday, Myracle was asked to officially withdraw from the running to preserve the “integrity” of the awards and the judges’ decisions. The NBF has agreed to donate $5,000 to the Matthew Shepard Foundation in recognition of their mistake. (The plot of Shine centers on a gay teen who falls victim to a heinous hate crime.)

On Twitter, Myracle was over the moon last Wednesday in response to her nomination: “I’m a lucky girl for SO many reasons. THANK YOU, TWITS-wait-TWEETS? TWITTERERS! Thx, Twitterfolk, for all yr txts. I’m grinning BIG time!” This morning, she seems to be taking the news in stride, mostly responding to followers and fellow writer friends who are offering their condolences: “Ha! Luv u, Gayle!!! RT @gayleforman: Phew. SHINE can join the list of my other best-of 2011 books that were not nominated for an #NBA.”

Harold Augenbraum, the National Book Foundation’s executive director, told Publishers Marketplace, “We regret the hurt that it caused Lauren. It’s none of her doing. On behalf of the Foundation, I apologize. [Myracle’s] work is very good. what more can I say?”

If her work is “very good,” why not keep it nominated?

Hi! I lurve the winnie seeris so much! i love the way Mrs.Myracle writes(I.E.her writing isn’t dark! Like Rick riordan!)I read Elevcen when i was seven,(hey, that rhymed!)twelve when I was nine, Thirteen when i was ten. oh, and thirteen plus one when i was ten as well. from age 8-10, That entire seeris was my favorite!(pLease do not ask why it isn’t now ) I used to think Winnie was me, but I realized I thought Alex Rider was like me too, but he’s a he, and I do not work for M16(sadly, I’d be the best eleven year old spy out there..)But I applaud You, lauren myracle, for writing what is on a girl’s mind(not all the puberty ickyness, but the odd stuff that maybe boys think of too. still not puberty ickyness!) Anyway, I forgot an actual human being wrote that! It felt like i was reading my own mind or something! You are awesome Mrs. myracle as long as you continue he Winnie perry seeris.

I assume they are blaming this on a typo? The similarity between “Chime” and “Shine?” Well, let’s cut them some slack. It’s not like the NBF has any book editors in its membership. Who DOES it contain? “Writers” for Entertainment Weekly?

Brian, thanks for the laugh. the quality at Entertainment Weekly has really dropped off lately.

Just by saying “what can I say” he’s acknowledging that what he HAS said isn’t sufficient. “Her work is very good” is a bigger insult than saying nothing at all. He should have shut up, or spoken with sincere regret and eloquence. He ended up sounding like a jerk.

People are so busy texting and tweeting and multitasking that they are not detail oriented any more. And they can’t read. This error is very serious and I hope heads roll.

The saddest part is thus was not an editing mistake, I have read that the reason this happened was because the committee called in and gave their nominations on the phone as to not have anything written down.
