Sneak peek at DC's 'Batman #2': Hello, Nightwing! -- EXCLUSIVE PREVIEW

BM_Cv2_ds

There have been many interpretations of Batman over the years, but the aspect of the character that I’ve always enjoyed most is his cerebral side. Some of the best stories about the Caped Crusader are really Agatha Christie-style mysteries, with Bruce Wayne as a latter-day Hercule Poirot with a utility belt. (There’s a reason Batman first appeared in an issue of Detective Comics.) So it was intriguing to see that last month’s Batman #1 — part of DC’s company-wide reboot — instantly threw the reader into a legitimate whodunit, with evidence that implicated Bat-protege Nightwing in a brutal murder. In the opening pages of Batman #2, we see the hero quickly dispatch a robber gang, but then we’re in CSI territory, with Commissioner Gordon checking out the corpse’s wisdom teeth. Nightwing stops by to explain how his DNA got under the dead guy’s fingernails.

You can read the full issue when it hits stores Oct. 19. For now, check out EW’s full sneak peek here. Intrigued by the slow-burning mystery? Think Commissioner Gordon missed his calling as a Gotham’s most melancholic dentist?

Darren, you’re so right. I’ve always found frustrating that the movies, in particular, tend to shortchange the Darknight Detective’s Sherlock Holmes side in favor of gadgetry and vehicles and mano a mano clashes. Obviously that’s all valid–Batman is a man of action–but his origin story (or stories) tells us he studied criminology as well as martial arts!

Not having read any Batman comics, I can only comment on the Batman media I’ve been exposed to, which at this point is the Christopher Nolan movies and about 2 seasons of Batman: The Animated Series on DVD, courtesy of my husband. But I must agree that I’ve definitely been pleasantly surprised by the BTAS episodes that show him doing some intelligent detective work. I tend to forget that he’s VERY smart in addition to being rich, well-trained, and well-provisioned…and every time I’m reminded of his detective abilities, I get a little more of a crush on him. (Also Robin. College-age Robin is surprisingly cute. This makes me want to find out more about Nightwing now.) My apologies for airing my arguably creepy crush on fictional men (superheroes, no less), but I’m just trying to agree with you guys in a slightly different way by saying smart is sexy. :)

Not to be snarky, but I gotta wonder if EW is getting a kickback from DC for plugging these “New 52s”? An awful lot of exlcusive previews when a year ago I saw almost nothing about comics that wasn’t movie-related…

I think the whole movie industry has gone down hill. Television is mostly a bunch of stupid reality shows.

I still love comics. Much better.
