I saw the advertisements for the series on HBO, bought the books and read them non-stop, twice while waiting for the fifth book.. I will wait for the next one and hope I live long enough to finish the next one after that. I did come close to throwing the last one across the room a couple of times towards the end of it.. and wait to see what happens to Arya…
The best fantasy series I’ve ever read, and I’ve read many of them.

As to those who think ASoIaF is anti-feminist, the novels have a few of the strongest female characters I have ever read.

“I’d love to see somebody do Roger Zelazny’s Nine Princes in Amber. What a fantastic HBO series that would be.” Oh hell yes

Did anyone else get the feeling that Coldhands was Benjen Stark?

Since GRRM is helping with the screenplays for HBO, I fear he will take even LONGER to complete the “last” two books.Aggh…..

No martin is a far better writer than tolkien- you read tolkien when you are 11 years old-its good. but hell i can not read him now-his writing style is so over the top. No martin is far better the action and characters have more depth. Lord of the rings was nothing until the hippies in the 60′s started to make him a big deal.

Better schmetter. They’re both very different, and who you judge to be better depends on what you want from a book. I’m a huge fan of LORR, which I read when I was a kid, and think that plot-wise it’s up there with the very best that fantasy has to offer. However, as has been pointed out in this thread, his characters are not particularly well fleshed out. This is partly because the characters represented almost abstract human qualities, and so mostly ended up being a bit 2-D, but mostly because the story took precedence. For me (and many other readers) the main appeal of Martin is that the characters are so vivid, and so believable. Yes, the plots are also excitingly unpredictable (at least to me), but I think it’s fair to say that characterisation is Martin’s strongest point as a writer. For proficiency at writing, with efficiency and aesthetic, there are lots of writers I prefer to either Martin or Tolkien.

I love the books but answer me this, if GGRM were the best why would he say the name Tolkien every other word? Even he knows he’s inferior in the genre. Tolkien built it, Martin is painting the walls.
