Excerpt from Mindy Kaling's book 'Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?' available online

Mindy Kaling, a.k.a. Kelly on that show that used to have Steve Carell, is taking a cue from fellow NBC funnywoman Tina Fey with her upcoming book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? A 27-page excerpt has been made available online by the publisher, Crown, for anyone who wishes to read it, and from the looks of it, ISHOWM? will be, like Fey’s bestselling Bossypants, a collection of short, humorous essays.

Well, essays might be the wrong word. The pieces available in the excerpt really aren’t all that much more than extended Twitter musings, on topics like eating cupcakes, things that make her cry, and “why do men put on shoes really slowly?” I don’t know about the tone of the rest the book, but a lot of it sounds like the fashion opinions of Kelly Kapoor mixed with a Miss Manners-esque advice column. For example, here are two entries in her list of things men should do: “Own several pairs of dark wash straight-leg jeans. Don’t get bootcut, don’t get skinny, just a nice pair of Levis without any embellishments on the pockets. No embellishments anywhere. At all. Nothing. Oh my God.” And: “Wait until all the women have gotten on or off an elevator before you get on or off. Look, I’m not some chivalry nut or anything, but this small act of politeness is very visual and memorable.”

It’s cute, but not anywhere as funny as one would expect from a writer on The Office. But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is set to release in November.

This makes me feel like Mindy Kaling is my best friend.

LOL. I LOVE the title of this book!!

  • Kat

Maybe it would have been more appropriate to have a woman review this book as they are obviously the target audience. I love the little sample I read. Mindy’s aces with me.

I read these excerpts today and thought “Mindy and I would be really great friends.” It seemed like a really good preview of a great book. Can’t give away all the good parts.

Excuse me? I spent the better part of an hour in my cubicle yesterday posting these fake “I love Mindy” comments. The LEAST any of you could do is pretend they’re legitimate!

  • Jara

I think this book is hysterical. But yeah, I’m sure men are simply not going to roil with laughter and recognition and “OMG I thought I was the only one who deal with this” when reading “Why do men put their shoes on so slowly.” Sorry this book clearly is not for you. Me, I intend to buy multiple copies!

    • Not Buying It

Yes, we can certainly trust comments that breathlessly proclaim he or she is going to buy “multiple copies” of a book. Because so many people do that.

      • Jara

Actually I will buy multiple copies. Because I have a teen and I know she and her friends would love this book, not just its title but it’s message. I plan to have her give it as Sweet Sixteen gifts to several friends, since I know those events will be comming up after publication of the book.

By the way, Not Buying It. Many of us out here in the provincal midwest do buy multiple copies of the books we love as gifts.

My multiple copies (in addition to the kids books I send as baby gifts)
    1. Operating Instructions by Anne Lamott. Perfect to send a new mom.

    2. Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life. I have sent this one to both friends and relatives as a 40th birthday present. It consists of very short entries which a perfect for my friends who ususally have only about 15 minutes at a time to read anything between carpooling and making dinner and helping with homework.

    3. Life on the Line. Grant Achatz’s book about life as a chef and a cancer patient. I have bought this as a birthday gift for several men I know who have fantasies about being a prof chef.

    4. Barbara Walter’s Auto-biography. My mom loved it and I gave it as a gift at several relatives 80 bithday parties.

I have no connection to the publishing industry. I just love books and love sharing them with friends. My daughter is now intersted in doing the same and Kalling’s book seems a great place to start. My guess is any teen would be intringued by the title.

Jara: Why don’t you post your entire client list? We’d be much more likely to believe you then.

There’s such a thing as the “soft sell.” It works. Just ask Tina Fey.

“Provincial midwest” was a nice touch, though. Too bad the network research showed Kaling’s appeal there was nonexistent.

      Better luck next time!

Diane. You are funny. I am an attorney in Chicago (part time) and a mom of teens. My client list consists of people who do things like sell hardware and medical equipment…not a book publisher writer on anything in the lot. Some of us just love books. I’m suprised that this is so hard to believe.

  • Jara

It really bothers me that people think I am a shill. It’s really sad so few people love books that it’s almost unbelievable. I would be happy to e-mail Mr. Staskiewicz from my work e-mail so that he can post that I am indeed a midwest based attorney who has no connection to anyone connected with this or any other book!

I have been surfing online greater than 3 hours these days, yet I by no means discovered any fascinating article like yours. It’s pretty price enough for me. In my opinion, if all website owners and bloggers made excellent content as you probably did, the web shall be much more helpful than ever before.
