Diane Farr is 'Kissing Outside the Lines' in interracial romance concept memoir: Watch the trailer

Diane Farr has a reputation for frank talk (Loveline, The Job, Rescue Me, Californication, AssCastles), and the follow-up to her first book Girl Code — the concept memoir Kissing Outside the Lines, which examines interracial relationships in America, including her own marriage — is no exception. Watch our exclusive first look at the trailer for the book, now on shelves, below. It does a good job of making you want to read it with clever displays of praise from the likes of Tim Robbins (“Smart, funny and insightful — Diane Farr has written a a great book on the challenges facing interracial couples in America”), Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen (“Farr has three kids and she still found time to write a pee-yourself funny examination of interracial love. I hate her”), and Lisa Ling, who also cameos (“As a journalist I found the reach of Diane’s book inspiring and important, but as a wife to someone of a different ethnic background — it was like therapy with laughter”). It also makes you want to see Farr film a documentary on the subject.

This is a remarkably poorly made video. Terrible editing that doesn’t follow the progression of the song, words that disappear from the screen too quickly, shaky camera work and no color correction. Yikes.

    That. Was. Adorable.

  • lucas stinks

I loved this and can’t believe that Lucas totally missed the point – do music video’s even “follow the words” to a song? I love the shaky – she is on a bus! and isn’t that super 8 in their that he thinks is uncorrected footage? amateur

LMAO totally missed the point? You can’t even read half of the text, it moves far too quickly. The footage is UGLY. When it’s that shaky it’s nauseating to watch, they could have easily done it on a bus with a steadicam (do you know what that is?)
The highlights are way overexposed, a lot of the footage looks washed out. You have no idea what you are talking about man…the video isn’t a total fail because it’s still sort of sweet and it relies on the quality of the song but it is not well made at all and you have no idea what you are talking about.

I agree. Completely missed the point. This isn’t about the quality of the editing, composition or lightening at all.

I must say the video is adorable. Being in an interracial relationship myself I am looking forward to read what Diane has to say. I remember her being on Loveline and she was hilarious and I’m sure this book is too!

    Great job!

Very touching & heartfelt video, especially for a book, showing that Cupid’s arrow does not discriminate. Interested in reading this now.

Love the trailer, can’t wait to read the book!

    totally made me cry.

I haven’t read this book, but it sounds excellent. I particularly like interracial romance novels, like Sinful Liasons by JC Gardner (www.booksbyjcg.com). Has anyone read both? Or.. read multicultural romance novels? I want to know if I should add ‘Kissing Outside the Lines’ to my list. The trailer looks amazing, though. I hope the book lives up to it!

As a multiracial woman, this video made me cry. It really touched me, because i watch people the same way this video did and it makes me smile when i see people crossing ethnic and color boundaries. I am a EEO dater, and sadly, even though i see people doing this, it is still not enough. I say that only because i know what is holding a lot of people back is not attraction … it is missconceptions and stereo types that then cause a certain ethnicity to not be attractive. I blog about some of this, but I am hoping to buy your book and blog with your book. I tend to date Asian men, and I look black or hispanic, but mostly mixed. Thank you for your video… its time to make it go viral! Its not a fetish, its an appreciation of human biengs and their gorgeous features!

this book was very much needed. the only thing i would change is adding the stories that did not end up as successful. my family did not accept my marriage with a black man and it ruined are marriage. he was never allowed even to come to my parents home and that caused alot of problems in our marriage. people need to see how much hurt they can cause. we tried for many years . had three kids but end up not keeping our family together . we had other problems but i feel if we did not have this added issue we would of kept our family together.

I was born in the 70’s my dad is philippino , Chinese, and Spanish. my mom is from the Midwest, an Irish girl. I grew up “outside” if the lines. The title of this book irks me. It sounds like something straight out of the fifties. so Diane has a racist mom who only sees black and white—no wonder she thinks it’s a novelty to be married to a Korean guy. For a person who is of mixed decent this book is out dated and condescending. I’d like to think that in 2011 that folks are more progressive and that mixed couples aren’t some novelty that needs to be dissected—but a normal part if life now. Ask yourself this, did you truly learn anything from this book? I think not…
