IMHO, this age of instant everything has led to serious lack of patience in many people (moreso in the younger crowd who’ve known the Internet and texting their whole lives). Authors need to work at the pace that best suits them and if an author’s readers truly enjoy his or her works, they should simply welcome new output whenever it’s available rather than complaining that the author is too slow. I’d say Martin’s only mistake (of which I’m aware) is hinting at releases too soon. He, and others, should be like Blizzard is in announcing game release dates: it’ll be done when it’s done.

Now, to be honest, I’ve only read the first book (twice) and had a hard time getting more than about 200 pages into the second (I find the vulgar sexual dialogue very off-putting), but now with this news I’m definitely going to try to get through the first four books prior to July 12.

When I see it, I’ll believe it. I refer to Martin as “He who will not be named”. For the past 2 years i avoid talking about him because I always end up in a foam inducing rant that ends up with my eyes rolling to the back of my head and speaking in tounges. Mind you, this isn’t even a contiuation of the series, just the second half of Feast for Crows. I swear to God Martin, It better be July 11th, and I better not have to wait 6 more years for the next!! And I better not see any more pics of u with scantly clad extras in Morrocco you pompass son of a….(foaming at mouth and covulsing on floor now)

I’m cool with him taking his time. It’s excellent stuff after all. My only worry is that he may, you know, die before finishing it. He’s not getting any younger and it’ll be really sad, IMO, if he can’t finish what he started. Just wouldn’t be the same. But that’s me being pessimistic. At any rate,if true, HOOORAY!!!!

For those who think the wait is too long: compare to ‘Earth’s Children’: 1980, 1982, 1985, 1990, 2002, 2011
I like the idea of an author and a publisher not churning out a book just because ‘it’s due’. Give me quality above quantity any time.

I’m pissed too waiting for 6 yrs, but its finally here. I don’t blame him. Sometimes I got so fed up with my work I just wanted to get away forever. GRRM will not tell the world that he has no more inspiration and stuck with the story. What then? R U then satisfied and move on? Off course not, you are going to bash him anyway. Give the man some credit. It is not easy writing a story of that proportion. As I said before, he created a story so immense, he doesn’t know how to close it with a bang. I hope he does when he finally gets to it. Like he said, winter is coming.

Glad it’s finally on its way; it’s only been 3 years since I finished the 4th book, and I’ve forgotten a lot of the characters and situations already…

I have been reading fantasy for over 35 years. I agree with those that say he has 2 many things going on to be believed on the re-write crap. We all saw it. The old expression applies here. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck. To many release dates, along with all his conventions, and a new mini series to augment his sales, like the Terry Goodkind disease. But at least Goodkind finished his, lame as the last book was. GRRM is overweight. I would be more surprised if he doesnt croak before he finishes the series Like Jordan did. The tragedy of the Jordan thing, was that Sanderson was a good writer before he took over Wheel of time. Now his own latest book makes War and peace look like a pamphlet.

Unfortunately one can’t write to order.. inspiration strikes or it doesn’t. If you don’t have the ideas in your head no amount of beating, begging or emotional blackmail will get them in there. Especially when you have the stress of thousands of people waiting for you to produce this masterpiece. You can’t produce art to a schedule – it’s not about being lazy.. as Neil Gaiman said in an interview.. George R R Martin is not your bitch. He doesn’t have a contract with you personally to write the next book in his series.

Game of Thrones is a fantastic series – one of the best I have read in 30 years of reading fantasy. As far as I’m concerned quality like this is worth waiting for. Just pray he doesn’t do a Jean M Auel (she delivered the last book her series about 20 years after the first and it was pants.)

If he can wait six years too publish it, I can wait six years to read it. There are a lot of other wonderful authors out there with finished series to be read. I think I’ll wait until this new one is in the second hand book store and buy it for pennies on the dollar. Perhaps he will have finished the other two by then. Only then will it be worth reading.
