'Pretty Little Liars': Four new books on the way, starting in July

Author Sara Shepard will add four new books to her Pretty Little Liars series, starting with a July 2011 release, EW has learned exclusively. The new books — from Alloy Entertainment and HarperCollins — will bring the total in the series to 12. Though the number was originally capped at eight, the ABC Family show based on the young-adult mystery series — which follows the aftermath of a popular girl’s disappearance — has been a ratings success and renewed interest in the books. The first new installment, Twisted, will be on sale July 5; Shepard’s The Lying Game was just released.

    • Mary

Only the first of the 4 new ones are coming out in July.

  • Samantha

Oh, this is a bad idea. :(

She should have stopped at the original four – like she’d planned – and just tied it up there. The first four were SO GOOD. And then the last four were just all over the place and not that good at all. And now…ANOTHER FOUR?

I think she orignially was gonna stick with 8 but abc family asked if she could write a few more so they could continue the show and have a few more seasons…..so i think thats why she didnt stop.

    • jaime

Hell no. all of the books are amazing!

AJ, I don’t know many ppeloe who use phone books for things other than as paperweights. I will occasionally refer to one for a business number, but very rarely. As I recall, beginning this year in Kansas City citizens will need to opt in to receive phone books. They will still be listed for free, and any copies requested will be free, but to save resources it will be more of a print-on-demand option than an automatic delivery. I may be wrong, but I think we are one of a few test markets for the concept. In any case, I have a feeling phone books are going the way of rotary phones, landlines, and the need to dial only seven digits.

umm excuse me but i love pll the books and u shld really stop

I thought the first few books were pretty good. I like Sara Shepard as a person (I met her at a luncheon in Pennsylvania where she grew up and she was very kind)–and I graduated from one of the schools/towns she based it on), but I feel like she writes as if she is trying to be hip and cool, but it just doesn’t seem genuine. I’ve seen some of the ABC Family series out of curiosity and really disliked it, though.

  • Beauty

The show is AMAZING! So I got the books. It’s hard trying to keep up with the show and books because the show is very different from the books. This is one of those rare times I think the show is actually better than the books. The books are awesome though and I’m from PA so I love hearing all the references to PA that others outside of PA wouldn’t know.

    • lisa

no wayyy. the show sucks compared to the book. if your read the books first you would definitely agree. a lot of things are wrong in the show and it makes no sense

      • JB

Disagree completely. I’ve read the books and the writing comes across disjointed and childlish. They don’t have a lot of the suspense that the show has. And frankly a lot of the changes made are for the better.

Sorry but some of the dialogue that she wrote made me cringe. It was beyond pathetic and I have never known teenage girls to say/think some of the stuff she wrote. Boiler room toilet humor stuff.

There’s a stronger element of sophistication with the show.

      • jaime

Honestly I don’t thin the book singles the show out or the show singles the books out. I read all of the books and they are amazing. Same with the show. The show will make you not want to get off the couch alone to go to the bathroom. And the show will keep you reading all night. They are both addicting

  • Erin

I’m SO excited! Sara’s awesome and these are my favorite books! Can’t wait to see what she’ll do next!

    • Albeer

he thkins the only reason they print them to still is to make advertising $$ – but seriously, who advertises in the phone book? I guess I should pick up one of the 1800 books on my street and find out, huh?

  • nishelle

im sooo excited! it comes out right after my birthday! i cant wait!!!

  • m1

These aren’t for guys, are they :)? I’m a sucker for a juicy mystery, so that’s why I’m asking.

    • caraforacracker@aol.com

im a guy and read them :)

  • Samantha

M1— I’d say they are pretty girly, but the mystery aspect of them is really good. It has you guessing and at the edge of your seat the whole way, and some parts are kind of spooky. Like others said, the first few books are the best. They’re worth a try at least.

  • Generation Gossip

I thought I was the only one who liked the first four books and thought the last four weren’t that great. I wonder how she’s going to generate more story for the next set.

I think they should of just left the series alone. Eight was enough.

  • Alyssa

Im really excited they were great books…. im really excited to read lying game cant til after xmas :^)

  • Jayyyy

All of you people saying that she should stopped it at 8… no i think she can really take this somewhere… i am an avid reader of books such as The Clique Series and Pretty Little Liars Series and The Immortals Series… i think Sara shepard is amazing and i think the next 4 books will be better than the last 8 :D

  • Ella

YAY!! Four more books of my favorite series… my life is complete!! And, as for everyone saying that she should have stopped at 8, NO WAY!! I always wanted to know what happened to Ali..

    • courtneyy

      hmmm, ali’s not dead lmao.

  • Laura

Pretty little liars is my FAVORITE series!! The eighth book was a good ending but the whole series kept me wanting more so why not read more? I am so excited I can’t wait that long!! And as for the show, it’s good but A is so much meaner and better in the book. And the characters are so wrong especially Emily. Great actresses but the ones in the book are better.

    • courtneyy

Yeah, i understand.. i was thrown off when I first started watching the show and kept saying they have them all wrong but now that i’ve been watching it.. i think the girls fit their characters, they just don’t look like them is all..

  • Jennifer

This is absolutely making me crazy..I had never heard of the books until the show and when the season ended I had to know who A was. I decided I’d read them and finished all 8. I felt I was lucky because I didn’t have to wait for any of the new ones. They were already out. Now I just bought the lying game and finished it today. Loving it as much as I love the Pretty Little Liars. Fishing around on the internet to see when the next one comes out in the new series, I see this! 4 more!??!?! I go to school, have a child, and am married, lol, I have no clue how I am going to be able to keep up. And there is no way I can just let it go. So patience for a book is something I’m going to have to learn, and patience for books in two series and trying to keep them straight is going to be a whole different ball game. Good luck to all you avid readers that are trying to do the same!
