Reminder: Shelf Life Book Club on Friday. Send your questions for author Sara Gruen!

Just a reminder that the Shelf Life Book Club meets again on Friday, this time to hash out Sara Gruen’s Ape House, the long-awaited follow-up to Water for Elephants (which is currently being made into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson).Gruen will be answering some of your questions, so fire away. What is it you want to know–how she creates such compelling animal characters? what it’s like watching a beloved book get made into a movie? how you write a followup when your last book was such a success? Let me know!

i’m interested in how sara gruen chooses which animal to focus on in her novels. does she choose the animal and then build the story, or think of a good plot and find an animal that fits it?

Did Ms. Gruen actually get into an enclosure and spend some face time right next to Kanzi and the others? I can’t remember what I’ve read about the process behind this book. But if she did get in with the bonobos – having studied my primatology in school, I know that Kanzi is a well-behaved guy, but the fact of the matter is that she still got into an enclosure with an adult male great ape. And we’ve all read stories about chimp attacks. I know that bonobos are very different from chimps and not generally aggressive, but I’m curious to know if it was still a bit frightening to meet with them (assuming she did actually enter into some sort of enclosure with them).

i am also curious to know how and to what extent ms gruen is involved in the film “water for elephants” and how she feels seeing what was once just her work handled by so many people. did she have a say in directors/actors, and what does she think of how they’re doing? (supposing she has been to set/been kept up with the progress.)
