President Obama pens children's book

of-thee-i-singImage Credit: Janet Mayer/PR PhotosHe’s leader of the free world–and a now he’s a children’s book author, too. Random House will publish President Barack Obama’s Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters on November 16. The book, illustrated by award-winning author and illustrator Loren Long, pays homage to 13 groundbreaking Americans including George Washington, Jackie Robinson, and Georgia O’Keefe.

Random House declined to comment, but president and publisher Chip Gibson said in a press release he was honored to publish the book: “[It's] an inspiring marriage of words and images, history and story. Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters celebrates the characteristics that unite all Americans–the potential to pursue our dreams and forge our own paths.”

Obama, inspired by his daughters Sasha and Malia, completed the manuscript for Of Thee I Sing before entering office in 2009. The best part of the book’s release? All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to a scholarship fund for the children of fallen and disabled soldiers serving our nation.

Will you be buying this book for your kids, Shelf Lifers? And any guesses as to who the other 10 Americans are acknowledged in the book? And anyone else now have My Country, ‘Tis of Thee now stuck in their head? Share them in the comments.

How long before we start hearing theories that he is trying to corrupt the youth of America with his “book”?

    • Anon

There are only two things i want to read from him. A confession and a resignation.

      • Kevin

A confession? To what exactly? I look forward to your destined-to-be-humorous answer.

  • alex

Also, how long before Glen Beck and Fox News ignore the specifically made point that he completed the manuscript BEFORE entering office and start on a tirade of “OHH! How did he have time to do this?! wah wah i’m crying now” I give it minutes. But I think it’s a great idea and love where the funds from the book will go.

How long before the rest of you digest the KoolAid and realize he is a lousy President?

    • @Andrea

It doesn’t take Kool-Aid to think that Fox News can be frighteningly and willfully inaccurate. I don’t think Obama’s been a great president, but I totally agree with Jenn and alex up there. It’s very likely that this information will be spun and manipulated by certain factions. And besides the fact that that’s poor and biased reporting, it just takes away attention from the real problems of this administration. Every president has problems, so I’m not trying to jump on the “NObama” train…I’m just ACTUALLY trying to be fair and balanced and say that no, he’s not quite been the great force of change we wanted, but yes, this story will be repackaged and retold by certain conservatives with an agenda. Anyways, the book seems like a nice idea and I also love where the profits will go. Hopefully it’s a good book.

Maybe he’d be a better if you tea bagging right wingers would stop blocking every piece of legislation he tries put through. The GOP could care less about what might be good for the country they are concerned about what’s good for the party.

      • Diane

Just out of curiousity how can the Republicans who control 41% of the Senate and 42% of the House actually block any legislation unless it’s so bad that members of the DNC vote with them?

Will you be happy when the government owns the health care system, so it can be a disaster like the one in the U.K.?

    • Couchtime With Jill

Whether you think he’s a good president or not has little to do with whether the book will be good. The book seems like a great idea.

    • megr

you’re funny. koolAid. digest. heh heh. more

    I love having a president who’s a writer.

    • Jan

I love having a president who’s a reader. I love having a president who is intelligent.

  • Elie

No – wont buy it. Havent you heard? His daughters are off limits.
Tired of high profile non writers “writing” books and now they are sucking the life out of the childrens book area because you only have to “write” a little bit. Dont care if its singers, actors, politicos, left or right – must be awful for real writers to have a big lump of the annual acquistion budget handed over to some celebrity “writer”

    • Jan

Barack Obama was a published author BEFORE he was president.

      • Elie

If being a “published author” means having your friend – initials W. A. – ghost write your book then yeah he’s a writer.

      • Anon

Who stated in his book that when push comes to shove he will stand with his father’s people, the muslims.

  • Anne

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know whether this is the first time a sitting president has published a book? I can think of First Ladies and retired presidents, but not sitting…
