Young adult author Gayle Forman’s emotional novel If I Stay hung on a teenage coma victim’s choice between sticking around on Earth and passing on to the other side. I guess the fact that Forman has written a sequel hints a bit at that book’s ultimate decision. Here’s an exclusive first look at the cover for that upcoming sequel. Where She Went will be set three years after the events of If I Stay and will focus on Mia, the protagonist, and her life amongst the living as she meets up with her former boyfriend, Adam, for the first time in years.
The first book had a lot of “will-this-be-the-next-Twilight” buzz surrounding it when it came out, and none other than Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke had been attached at one point. The movie’s still in the works and is set to start filming next year. That, combined with Where She Went’s April 4, 2011 publication date, should make it a big year for the series.
Anyone a big fan of the first book? How do you feel about a sequel? And are you digging the cover?

What?
It’s a beautiful counterpart for the paperback cover of If I Stay. Lovely – April’s a long wait.
I love it! Mysterious and beautiful. but i want it now!
It’s absolutely GORGEOUS. When I read the first book I had no idea there was going to be a sequel.
Me either! This is great news! I can’t wait to great it.
Sounds like the first book was a Lovely Bones retread.
Incorrect! Read it and you’ll know the books are different. If I Stay is a much lovelier book that Lovely Bones.
And this is why people should never judge by a summary. I once had a friend dismiss “Never Let Me Go” because it sounded too close to “The Island”. *sigh*
If I stay was a great book and Im so happy there will be a sequel. I like the cover but since its in Adams perspective…Im surpised hes not on there somehow.
The girl on the cover looks like Claire from Lost with dark hair (Emilie de Ravin)
Ahhh! I was about to say that! She really does!
So many terrible YA covers out there, including this one. Yikes.
I thought the ending of If I Stay was fairly obvious…?
I didn’t LOVE If I Stay for its ending. I loved that it was uniquely written, had characters that were likeable and real, a relationship that was less than perfect but entertaining and interesting to learn about.
So excited about this book. If I stay is my fav book ever.
I loved the first book. It was very emotional and well written and I’m glad there is going to be a sequel.
I absolutely loved If I Stay-it’s one of my favorite books. Which makes me Slightly Apprehensive that this sequel will not hold up to the awesomeness of the first book. I hope Gayle Forman will prove me wrong next April!
Have no fear — you will not be disappointed. I wasn’t!
i loved the first one and cant wait for the second one
It looks like any other Teen cover you would find in a book store. I don’t understand why everything has to become a franchise these days. One book turns into a series, which turns into movies, which turns into movie merchandise, etc etc. The cycle is so trivial and reduces good literary works to pop culture anecdotes.
I loved If I Stay – I thought it was beautiful and extremely touching. The characters were great, even if Mia’s parents and friends aren’t considered to be perfect people. Even though I cried, I really did like the ending. I think it wrapped it up nicely, so I’m worried that adding a sequel will mess up the story, but I’ll definitely give it a try.
