Betty White signs a two-book deal with Putnam

Betty-White-bookImage Credit: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Betty White’s late, late-career resurgence is something that could not have been predicted nor cannot be explained by any pop culture astrology, but regardless of whether her recent popularity is ironic, earnest, or in some gray-haired zone in between, the 88-year-old is definitely taking full advantage of it.

USA Today reports that the former Golden Girl will pen two books for G. P. Putnam’s Sons. Listen Up!, set for a spring 2011 release, will be a collection of lessons learned and observations made during White’s long tenure in Hollywood, from guesting on Password through hosting SNL. The second book will focus more on her work as an animal-rights activist. The Zoo and I: Betty and Her Friends, expected in stores in 2012, will feature presumably adorable stories and photos of White with zoo fauna. Aww.

I like Betty White, but wow, talk about overexposure.

A similar thing happened with Rodney Dangerfield in the mid-80s, when he went from doing an occasional (and hilarious) stand-up on ‘The Tonight Show’ every so often, to appearing in every film and TV show in sight–he even recorded a comedy rap album. Just too much of a good thing.

The same seems to be happening with Betty White. Sometimes less is more.

Will she be alive long enough to write two books?

I love Betty White but when is enough enough? Maybe she should take a break and rest herself a bit.

    Check Out

We have always loved Betty White–the press just started to make a fuss over it. For years, she has been the go to older actress for comedy. I would love to read her books. She started in live television at the beginning and she has worked with the best.

    Betty White for President!!

Go Girl!! I love Betty White. She is a comdianne who brings laughter to her fans no matter what she does. She is an advocate for the plight of animals and now she is a representitive of the older crowd that seems to be ignored in this day and age. And she is honestly a very nice lady. I have met her. She is all good.

  • Deborah

I love this woman and there is no over-exposure with her either BECAUSE her fans want to see her—as opposed to other aging celebrities in their 30/40’s that beg for media attention constantly

    Go Betty White!!!

How wonderful it is to see Betty White promoting animal rights. Does anyone know if she’s vegan?

“Betty White’s late, late-career resurgence is something that could not have been predicted nor cannot be explained by any pop culture astrology…” Seriously, it is not that hard to figure out. At a time when “celebrity” has come to mean “drug-addled, alcoholic, rehab jumping, individual with little talent,” or “trashy, spray tanned, vulgar, ignorant (did I mention trashy?) reality star,” Betty stands out as the true class act that she is.

Unlike many celebs, I think Betty White is actually very sharp, very funny and probably capable of penning a book that’s really worth reading. And after the long and brilliant career she’s had, she probably has TONS of classic-era anecdotes to share. This might have come to pass because of her recent upsurge in popularity, but if the book is as good as it has the potential to be, it will succeed on its own merits.

  • Yep

I believe in animal rights. They taste right on my grill.

Betty is a smokin’ hot mama. Me likey…hehehehe

I like the way you think…hehehehe

Its sad but true. I hope she lives long enough. She is ancient at this moment, they said that one of the books would be released in 2012. She will be about 90. Wow

    • Pam

My grandfather got married for the third time at 92 saying he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life without “that sort of thing”. My mother lived to be 93 and her sister is 94 and still going strong. If anyone can do it, Betty can though I think she should work on both books at the same time, perhaps recording her thoughts (just in case something, God forbid, happens to her before she’s finished them). Imagine she will not be doing the writing herself but will have someone putting her thoughts and memories down on paper. Good luck to her! She’s proof positive that laughter helps us live longer!

Correction: Betty White I’m sure means well, but she is NOT an animal rights activist. At best she’s a welfarist, e.g., she’s in favor of zoos and particularly keeping the unfortunate elephants at the LA zoo in bondage and pain. She also likes dogs and cats. You may be confusing her with Bob Barker, another show biz octogenarian who is a vegan and a genuine animal rights activist (e.g., he has financed the transport of zoo elephants to sanctuaries).

    • Dinjab

Splitting hairs. Betty White does more for animal welfare than 99.999% of Americans. I’ll call her an animals rights activist.

All you self-righteous vegans need to STFU, because you’re the reason animal rights causes don’t catch on. People think you’re freaks, and they don’t want to follow your lead.

“Geniuine animal rights activist”…fine, sorry Betty doesn’t make YOUR list.

By the way, Bob Barker is a decrepit sleaze, who has no idea how to treat PEOPLE. I respect what he’s done for animals, but he’s not a very nice person.

      • Lisa

I completely agree with everything you wrote, Dinjab.

Go Betty! You are the real thing, sweet lady, and a class act. Always have been. Always will be.
