'The Vampire Diaries' prequel novel: An exclusive cover peek

vampire-diaries-novelWhile Damon from The Vampire Diaries is busy tearing up the polls in EW’s official Sexy Beast competition, the show’s other bloodsucking protagonist is set to get a series of prequel books named after him. HarperCollins Children’s Books and Alloy Entertainment have announced that they will be releasing Stefan’s Diaries #1: Origins, the first in a planned trilogy of novels that will shed sunlight on the vampire brothers’ long, troubled history, including the Civil War-era romance that turned them against each other. The CW series, like fellow hyper-sexualized-neckbiter show True Blood, was based on a run of novels, and although it doesn’t appear that original author L. J. Smith will be penning this new trilogy, her creations have come full circle back into book form. The first entry of Stefan’s Diaries is scheduled to hit bookstores in November.

Fans of the show, what do you think? Will you still be gripped by the characters without all the brooding, occasionally shirtless eye-candy? How about those of you who read the original books?

the original books were pretty awful and seemed like they were written by a 14 year old for a junior high English class. let’s hope the original author isn’t penning these.

    • Kris

I know right? Someone gave me the first book for Christmas and I couldn’t finish it, even though I have a 1 hour commute to and from college on the bus. It was just too awful.

      • jasper

well i sadly finished the first 3 books (maybe 4, i can’t remember) just because i was bored. it was bad. and filled with grammar errors…and things like that generally don’t bother me…but in these books it did. thankfully the show doesn’t strictly follow these books.

      • Mells

Thank goodness I’m not the only one. These books were awful – I didn’t even like the Elena charachter at all. I like the charachter from the show much better. The fact that LJ Smith isn’t writing this new novel is a positive IMO.

Chris and Jasper the two of you can go screw yourselves, the books were great, and the two of you wouldn’t know good writing if bit you in your asses.

    • Siren

I completely agree. The books are terrible. But I love the show!

    • Emily O.

Agreed. After seeing the show, I tried to read the first book. It was terrible, and I hated Elena in it. I like her much better in the TV show, where she has some actual attractive personality features.

      • m

i have a great fondness for the books but then again, i read them when they first came out in the early 90s… revisiting books i loved as a teenager was fun, but i was just reminded how much i hated the last book and how glad i am that the series is really NOTHING like the books!!! :)

    • Zoey

Thank you! The books were terrible. I bought and read all 6 of them. Complete waste of money. The plot is just silly and the characters are infuriating (minus Damon). Elena, especially. If these aren’t written by LJ, I might actually read them.

    • Cody

much agreed I cant finish the first one, I believe that these are written by the writers of the show which I love.

  • FionaChan

LJ Smith is not the author?! disappointing. :/

  • Amanda

I kind of enjoyed the first few books, but the last 2 that were recently released were absolutely terrible.

    • DC

      Totally agree with FionaChan

    • Rica

I agree, the first one or two were entertaining, but they got weird/awful after that. I’m hoping no one spouts wings of protection (!?) on the show!

      • Kermit the Frog

I know the books were bad after the first one or two. They just got weird.

    • Mads

I know, the author should have just stopped after the first 4 books.

  • xokat

    Who IS penning them, then?

  • EricMontreal22

The backstories of the brothers are completely different in the books, aren’t they? (I tried to read the first one just because I dig the show, and as some have already said it was pretty dire–I got even less far than I did in my Twilight attempt). I think the brothers were turned in Italy in the novels, and not in the show? But I guess, even with a new set of novels coming out (that sound not just awful but bizarre, filled with alternate realities, etc) these will be aimed first at the tv show fans (I don’t think Damon even OWNS a diary in the books…)

    • Laura

I think you are right, in the books they don’t just have Italian heritage but gre up there. And all the Katherine stuff went down differently.

    • Sara

I am finishing up the 6th book right now and they are totally different than the show. I actually like the show a lot better. Elena is much more likable. The only similarity between the two is Damon. They are very similar in character and looks.
You are right regarding their heritage. In the novels, the boys lived in Florence, Italy in the 1500’s and were turned by Catherine there. In the show, they were turned in Mystic Falls during the Civil War.

  • Cindy

I think I will stick to the show. I hope that the original author at least gave them permission to write this new series using her characters – if she didn’t, that would be totally wrong.

  • Rachel

I tried to read the books and they were horrible so hopefully whoever wrote these books does a better job. I love Stefan.

  • Crissy

I really loved the books. You have to understand that they were written for Teens but other than that it is an amazing story and the last book Shadow Souls was the best one so far. I don’t know if I would read Stephan’s diary.

    • Holly

I also loved the books. I don’t know why people say “The books were terrible!” like it is a known fact and there can’t possibly be another opinion on the matter. Then they insult the intelligence of those of us who enjoyed them.

Anyway, I guess going into these books you have to think of them completely seperate from the original, since it is a different author and a different background story. I will probably read them.

      • jasper

there are lots of books written for teens that are quite intelligently written. TVD books are NOT among them. it’s cool if you like them. it doesn’t make you stupid or unintelligent. but they are just AWFUL books.

      • Holly

Again, that is only your opinion.

  • DW

I love that this book has three names on the cover, and not one of them is the author.

    • EricMontreal22

Ha! I know, right? The fact they credit Williamson and Plec on the cover, I guess makes us have to assume they’re using the TV show’s continuity and characters, otherwise they wouldn’t have to (they could still use Damon’s Photograph and the blurb about it being connected to the CW show, way True Blood has started with the Harris novels, which are starting to be worlds different too)

  • Clete

As an aspiring author, I attempted to read these books. They are not in the subject I write about. They were awful. I kept wondering, how does crap like this find an agent or publisher?

  • Dianne

I’ve been a huge fan of LJ Smith since I was in middle school–I’m in my mid-20’s now and still love thumbing through her books–but I admit that Vampire Diaries were my least favorite of her stuff. I’d recommend Dark Visions, Night World, or The Secret Circle or anyone who is curious about her work.

    • Dianne

      *for anyone who is curious

    • Anonymous

      I loved the Secret Circle!

      • connor

        i love secret circle jerks.

    • Amber

I so agree with you! I tried reading the vampire diaries but I just couldn’t. I didn’t like Elena or Damon in the books at all!
      L. J. Smith is a fantastic author though! She has done several good series. In my opinion Dark visions is her best! Her Night world series comes in second.
As for reading the pre-quel… No chance! I’m going to stick to the show.

    • fireflystare221

Everything you said is exactly the same for me. TVD was always my least favorite but Night World is awesome. I have been waiting forever for Strange Fate. I will never stop waiting. The Forbidden Game trilogy was always my personal favorite.

  • Anne Bouchard

I loved BOTH the books and the show. I don’t care for the Elena in the books…LOVE the TV version. I really wish they had included Meredith.

  • Jones19

I’ve been reading the first book and it’s very different from the show so L.J. Smith shouldn’t write this. She’s not a very good writer either so…

  • Sarah

LJ Smith is a great writer and I will Not be buying these if she is not writing them.

    • Melissa

I read the books before the tv series came out. I really liked them. I think that L.J Smith is a great writer. I think that if more people read the books before they saw the show that they would like the books.

  • Kat

I read the first book awhile ago and I agree with other posters that it was awful. Badly written, boring, and some of the characters were interchangeable. And so repetitive. Honestly, I get that Meredith has “elegantly arched eyebrows.” Write something else about her!

I was thoroughly surprised by the TV series and love it – definitely an example of better-than-the-book adaptation.
