Kendra Wilkinson's new memoir: I read it so you don't have to

I’ve always had a special place in my heart for reading the memoirs of others. Maybe it’s because I have a secret desire to write my own one day. Alas, I’m not famous and my mother would probably be the only one interested in such a book. So for now, I’ll continue with my fascination with the real stars.

So when Kendra Wilkinson’s new book Sliding Into Home popped up in the EW office this week, I grabbed it immediately. (Not sure why the rush. I think I might be the only person in the office who actually wanted to read it. But I’ll pretend it was a lucky grab.) And I know what you’re thinking. Kendra Wilkinson of Playboy fame a star? Well, that’s debatable. But she put her memoirs on paper nonetheless.

And if you can get past the weak writing and the fact that it’s called Sliding Into Home with no real connection to softball/baseball, she actually has an interesting story to tell. (I get that she’s into sports, but after reading the book, soccer is clearly her forte, not softball. But I digress.) She’s had a tough life, and it’s really a shock she’s as successful as she is. Have you turned on E! network lately? Anyway, maybe you could give the book a chance. Especially if you’ve seen The Girls Next Door or Kendra. But if not, I bring you the 10 most interesting things I learned about Kendra by reading:

  1. She had some pretty awful teachers growing up. A former math teacher told 14-year-old Kendra if she wore a short skirt and talked his class up at a parent’s night he would give her an A. (She did, and she got that A.) Another teacher laughed at her when she announced in class she wanted to be a marine biologist. (How rude!)
  2. Wilkinson did a lot of drugs. A lot. Crystal meth, cocaine, acid, weed. You name it, she probably did it. (And this is why I’m amazed she still looks as young as she does.)
  3. And she drank a lot of alcohol. The first time she got drunk, at age 12, her mom took her to juvenile hall to spend the night. The officers took her in the back, tried to scare her, and then let her go because they were full. (Drinking at 12! I was a heavy drinker of juice at 12.)
  4. Wilkinson also admits to pretty severe cutting. (She said she hid this from her friends like she hid her other destructive behavior.)
  5. She was suicidal at one point, and spent time in a psychiatric ward after overdosing on pills. At the hospital, she tried to overdose by eating a tube of toothpaste. (She admits that this was like hitting rock bottom.)
  6. Her turning point was a bad reaction to too much cocaine one night. She went home to her mom, asked for forgiveness, and got her life back on track. (Thank goodness. Her retelling of that night is chilling.)
  7. Wilkinson was discovered by Hugh Hefner after she modeled in a car show with her then boyfriend, Zack. (Kendra met Hef at 18 when she worked his 78th birthday as a painted girl.)
  8. When she first moved into the mansion as one of Hef’s girlfriends, she didn’t get along with the other girlfriends (and later co-stars) Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt. (The Girls Next Door portrays them as very close, but the girls weren’t until the later seasons, Wilkinson shares.)
  9. Wilkinson likes Nancy Grace, and said she might be the one person to change her mind about something. (I find this odd. Anyone else?)
  10. She has a huge fear of her belly button stemming from an episode of Ren and Stimpy. (This one doesn’t surprise me so much. That was a weird show.)

So whether or not you’re a Kendra fan, you have to admit that she’s had a rough life. And for someone who spent most of her youth completely out of control, I’m happy she found a way out. She’s happily married with a really cute baby. And she’s got a rag to riches story I just can’t deny.

    Who Cares!?

    • jay

This woman has a kid? That kid will one day be teased beyond belief, tortured, other kids will call his mamma a whore, and they will have proof! Women like this shouldn’t be allowed to have kids.

      • Katie

Wow, Jay. That’s a little harsh. Sounds like she has worked hard to turn her life around, has married and had a child. Just because she is honest about her mistakes doesn’t mean she should forever be unable to have kids. You might think about therapy to deal with whatever issues you seem to have.

      • levelheaded

Ummm, I would rather people who are judgemental and cruel not have children. But I don’t get a say in other people’s procreation and I understand that as a good thing.

      • etm

Her baby is so cute, and her husband is very handsome.

      • Callingthekettleblack?

Jay, old fashioned much? People like you should be put in a time machine headed to the 1800′s where their outdated views on life are commonplace. If you consider her to be a whore I don’t even want to know what you would call today’s youth.

      • Tally

Shouldn’t be so quick to judge. We have all fallen short of God’s grace at some point. To say she doesn’t deserve to be a mother is a bit much!

      • Kristen

She has transformed into a wonderfl woman, wife, and MOTHER! I am happy to see how successful she has become, based on her past. Just because she did things in her younger years does not mean she cannot overcome them…which is excatly what she did. KUDOS to her!!!! I personally like Kendra :)

      • manda

wow…she has grown up jay..shes not like that anymore at all..she got married, had a baby, and is a WONDERFUL mother and woman now. everyone has a past..geez

      • Marie

her life is back on track, and you seem like a dbag.

      • Makayla

jay, i a teenager and i look up to her because i can relate to her and the way she has overcome the things in her past help me believe that you can do all wrong and end up good and i have hope my life will be got i will be strong because of her story so don’t judge just because they have done something in their life because you don’t really know what the person is like until you have meet them and got to know them

The thing that Kendra is she seems to have an learnning disablity. Her speech, reasoning, and pretty much everything about her makes me feel she’s a bit slow. If she didn’t get the right attention for this when she was young, it could explain some of the difficulties she’s had.

      • Edith

KENDRA IS GREAT! I’m a huge fan, and I enjoyed reading her book. Unless your perfect stop judging other people.

      • shari

you’re absolutely correct! Later on in her book it was determined that she was a little slower so she was then put in the right class. I love Kendra too

  • Idk

I guess I’m happy for her. It’s hard to root for the messed-up girls who get through life based on their sexual attractiveness.

    • levelheaded

Why? I always think it’s sad. It’s happy when someone understands that they are more than just their looks.

  • PC

    LOL at the first comment.

She’s not a real celebrity, lets please stop treating these professional tramps as stars please!

  • TQB

That Ren & Stimpy ep was DANG freaky. That’s about the only interesting and useful tidbit about this tartlett.

  • DMR

What I like about this book are the great values it teaches us – sleep with people for money, do drugs, focus solely on external features then write a book about it, counting your money all the way to the bank.

I love that most of our culture came name 3 famous scientists but we can name the harlots that slept with Hef… for money…

    • CEB

If thats honestly what you got from reading the book then you seriously need to increase your IQ a little before you can try and act smart with someone you dont even know. What are peoples problems with Kendra?! Has she ever done anything to personally offend anyone? I diddnt think so. Despite whatever happened in her past … i think she wouldnt be the person she is today. And to be totally honest look at her now, shes an extremely lucky woman she has really made something of herself, she has a child with the man she loves and is married to. She is living most peoples dreams right now. At the end of the day who cares if shes a celebrity or not? or if she she was one of heffs girlfriends? No one is perfect so how dare anyone critisze? Shes obviously had a very interesting and rocky life thats far from whatever anyone else will ever experience. That is why people may want to read her book… and if you dont like it i dont think anyone acctuially gives 2 stuffs. Get off your high hourse and stop thinking your above her, if you think shes de-morralising and un-classy then you should really look at what you wrote and see that your condessending, unclassy and honestly very tacky with your use of sarcasm…. what is it they say? sarcasm is the lowest form of humor?

  • The Truth

Memoirs are supposed to be published at the twilight of your life or after the completion of a significant career (sports, politics, CEO, etc). Her life should not even be half over yet and she has had no real career to recount. I applaud her for overcoming hardships and difficult moments in her life, but she should not yet be releasing a memoir, yet.

Though I’ll never read the crappy book, The Girls Next Door was one of my guilty pleasures in reality viewing, and I REALLY enjoyed the snippet about her first time with Hef:
“One of the girls asked me if I wanted to go upstairs to Hef’s room. In my head I could hear my mom’s voice, ‘You know they have orgies there.’ I said ‘Okay, if I have to.’…I wasn’t thinking about how much older Hef was, all the body parts worked the same. I wanted to be there.”

  • lettergirl

good grief…the title of the book alone is worth me reading it (if someone gave it to me for free and i was in the waiting room at the dr’s office-waiting for my STD results…or finding out who is my baby’s daddy). ha!

  • Jack

Does she give tips on how to be a low class Hollywood ho?

  • TQB

BTW, I really do appreciate the “I Read It So You Don’t Have To” features. There is no end to the material I would like you to cover.

  • Michael

I’m also pretty shocked she looks so good considering everything I just learned!

  • skbnwinters

If they have a daughter will Kendra name the baby Helena Hand Baskett??

  • Anonymous!

WOW!!after reading this (the comments) I feel bad for Kendra. What ever happened to if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say it all? If you don’t care about her, then don’t read the link that takes you to a blog based on her. If all you have to do in your lives is sit around reading blogs about people that you don’t care for, and all you do for enjoyment is write something negative about them, then seriously GET A LIFE! She has been through some tough times, and yeah know I watch her show, and ya she might have had a different life than me, something I may not have chosen, but I wouldn’t judge her, I’d appreciate her for her good traits, if you can’t do that then don’t watch, or read the blog! It’s amazing how people can bash celebrities for their flaws, not everyone is perfect, and sorry but if you think you are, then your I feel sorry for you! I’d say good luck to Kendra, and hope her life is easier now, than her childhood.

    • Jackie

Couldn’t have said it better myself :)

  • Hotlanta Diva

Kendra is a beautiful woman, wife and mother with a down to earth personality. Honestly, she is the girl next door and I have watched every episode of “Girls Next Door” and “Kendra” and she is wonderful so for all the people who a sending the negative vibe or at least trying to send it her way back off cause I got her back. Love you Kendra

  • april

I think her book I’d awesome went and bought it today and almost done. She had a rough life but turned it around. I look up to her and think she is a great person for growing up and getting out of that childhood of hers.
