I am the proud publisher of the Nancy Drew books at Grosset & Dunlap. Thanks for this article! We love Nancy!

One of my early favorites was “The Secret of the Old Clock”. I grew up in the 50′s and 60′s and one of my favorite things to do was get up early to read Nancy before I got ready for school. Besides my own new collection I loved borrowing my friend’s books which were her mother’s from the 1930′s. These books got me hooked on reading. Wonderful memories!

HUGE Nancy Drew fan since I was about 7 or 8! Im 24 now and still have my whole collection.I loved how she made things happen, she didnt wait for anyone to figure things out for her. I loved Greek Odyssey the best because I liked Mick better than Ned. My sister and I were also HUGE fans of the crossovers with the Hardy Boys like Shockwaves.

I used to read Nancy Drew mysteries but I especially loved the Trixie Belden series. My mom gave away those books years ago. I wish I could find the Trixie ones again!

Your best bet is used book stores. I was able to find quite a few of them. It took a lot of looking though. It looks like Amazon has some of them as well.

Ahh the good days when books didn’t have emo vampires in them!

I loved Nancy Drew books as a kid, I read all of them, but cannot remember a particular favorite. What I do remember, tho, is how frequently she would wash her hands, and tidy up her appearance (often wearing proper gloves and hats). To this day I will wash my hands and think “Nancy thought it important to wash her hands, and I guess I better follow her advice”. Thanks for keeping me clean and germ-free, Nancy!

After reading your article, I have just started to introduce Nancy Drew to my eight year old daughter, and she loves it!!! Thanks for bringing these great books back to my attention ;-)

I taught school for 36 years and always began the year by assigning my students to read either a Nancy Drew or a Hardy boys mystery. It got them into reading.
I have my own collection which is missing some and am trying to finish the set.
BTW, whatever happened to Cherry Ames and Vicky Bar, and the Dana girls?

I’m so glad that Catherine Garcia posted this article about Nancy Drew’s 80th birthday! I had hoped that there might be some mention of the occasion on the news on Wednesday, the actual anniversary. Alas, there was not! Anyway, I bought a set of Nancy Drew books for granddaughter last November, she didn’t want to read them, so I did. Now, I’ve read, or in some cases re-read, about 50 of the books, I’m collecting them, and also applying to teach a community course on Nancy Drew. I think we can all learn a lot from Nancy and it’s fun, too! It’s amazing that Nancy was such a trailblazer and an example of not having to sit around and wait for things to happen but actually going out and making them happen! My favorites are The Mystery and Lilac Inn, The Clue of the Broken Locket, and The Secret in the Old Attic. At least those are my favorites so far — I’m still reading!

I know this is much to late for a comment but I missed reading the story by a few days. I am old enough to have read all of the original books and loved them. They got me though many difficult times in my young life. I was unaware of the changes made until my daughter started reading them in the 70′s. While I was sorry they changed the stories I could see where my daughter could not relate to the 3o’s plots and cars. I was glad things were not so stereotyped especially when it came to race in the new series.

It was Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys and especially Trixie Beldon books that captivated me when I was about 8 to 13. They helped me through a pretty rough and lonely childhood. Thank heavens for books! As an adult I hunted used books stores until I was able to find most of the series again. As an adult I re-read many of the books to see if they still had that magic and sense of adventure. Of course they did!

Nancy Drew is the girl that made me fall in love with girls who could take control of a situation.

of course like your website however you have to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts. Many of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very troublesome to inform the reality on the other hand I’ll definitely come back again.
