Salinger was a WORTHLESS HACK – Glad hes dead

I think it’s a mistake to discount a successful cinematic interpretation of it. When I read the background of the so-called blogger who spit out “Julie & Julia,” I got the distinct impression that had she been alive today, she would have equally hated the movie (as she despised the blogger). But … it was a cute movie, and it’s sold more copies of Julia’s cookbook than the chef herself, bringing the art of french cuisine to a whole new audience.

Even if such a movie were a modest hit, even if it were a horrible interpretation – isn’t it worth it to expose “Catcher” to a new audience?

Since when was turning a book into a movie a good idea anyway? Leave it be.

Consider how kids will watch the movie rather than read the book, the lack of a movie is a wonderful thing! This has often been “the book” that actually gets kids interested in reading.

Absolutely not. It would be like slapping a Best Buy sticker on the Mona Lisa. Salinger was genius to let his art exist in the most accurate form.

A movie about a jaded, self-absorbed teenager in Manhattan? “No one gets my angst, man.”
Give Holden — the most annoying character in modern fiction (and I dare anyone to disagree – is he honestly anyone would enjoy spending an afternoon with?!) — a hint of eyeliner and, gentlemen, we might have the biggest money-maker of 2011!

It would make a terrible movie because it’s a hollow, thin book.

I respectfully ask you to… bring it on.

you either love Holden or you hate him, but in no way is Catcher a “hollow, thin book.”

No Way. Leave Holden alone. I do not trust Hollywood. Leave Holden alone.

Directed by Wes Anderson with no audience testing and Bill Murray has to appear. Long shots.. long movie.. not made for generic appeal but made for the art of it. Great sound track is imperative – Mothersbaugh must be involved.

    No. It’s not possible.

Nearly all of the book’s power lies in it’s narrative style. Without the constant voice of Holden, all that’s left of the story is a spoiled, bratty kid walking around New York.

Don’t we have enough of that on MTV as it stands?

I hope never to see a “Catcher” film made. Such a venture would be completely antithetical to everything that novel is about.

I don’t think it should be made into a film either, but when it does the only director I would want to do it would be Wes Anderson. His films seem to have a Salinger feel to them to me.

    Two words: Zac Efron

  • Matt

I think its a great idea. Martin Scorsese directs and Vinnie Chase stars as Holden.

  • swiz

That creepy looking vampire kid could play Holden. It would be awesome.

    Holden: Logan Lerman
    Directed by: Lasse Hallström

If the sale of film right can’t be avoided. Though, I hope it won’t happen.
