shane, read what I said. After praising his horror books, I said “his other great books don’t involve horror at all.” Also, I have to take issue with you saying that “old” Stephen King seems like a beginner now. I guess that’s just a question of preference. His newer books try too hard, in my opinion. His older works are great because of their simplicity. A rabid dog. A homicidal car. A deranged fan. Vampires. A hike to see a dead body. A pet cemetery. A haunted hotel. An ostracized girl. Those early books don’t try to do anything more than take one scene, one scenario, and relate it in exceptional detail. Having said that, I thought the Stand and It were exceptional and go far beyond the simple formula. But when he moved into the quasi-mystical and sentimental, he lost me. I thought the Dome would be a return to form, and it started off with great promise. But it fizzled. Ironically, his best book, in my opinion, is the non-fiction On Writing, a fascinating read.
