What's the best book you read this year?

It’s getting to be that time of year—the time for Best and Worst lists—and as I mull over EW’s, I’m thinking back over everything I’ve Read the full post.

I absolutely loved Lorrie Moore’s new novel, A Gate at the Stairs. Also, Blue Boy by Rakesh Satyal and the new Barbara Kingsolver, The Lacuna.

  • Jen Forbus

THE BRUTAL TELLING by Louise Penny is presently the best book I’ve read this year. I’m recommending it to everyone!

  • Sarah

“South of Broad” by Pat Conroy. I love all of his books and this one was no exception!

  • Kevin

“Olive Kittridge”. It won the Pulitzer and deserved it!

    • kct

I loved this book! After reading it, I read one of her previous books, “Abide with me,” also a great read.

    • Esme

Wow–I agree. Very powerful, and I loved Olive.

  • Vanity Feral

“The Bolter” by Frances Osborne and “Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi” by Geoff Dyer are both spectacular. I’ve been recommending them to everyone.

    • Tina Jordan

I forgot about The Bolter—I loved it too.

Sadly, I only had time to read 2 books this year, but they were both great reads. “The Graveyard Book” by Neil Gaiman (anything by him is awesome,) and “Too Fat To Fish” by Artie Lange (a comedian.)

    • Andy

I agree! The Graveyard Book was excellent!

  • Tony T

The Family Man by Elinor Lipman…a Truly Great Read. Funny, smart, and touching. I recommend it to everyone and also for EW Best Book of the Year.

Best book I’ve read in the last few years: The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill. It’s an amazing fictional account of slavery. You won’t be able to put it down.

    • Heat

I have to agree. The Book of Negroes is one of the best books I’ve ever read, not just in this year. It’s being published under a different title in the States though: Someone Knows My Name.

  • Lynn

“The Freedom To Rock” by T.L. Rotkiewicz. Just can’t put it down. Fiction that puts a whole new spin on rock’n roll story telling.

  • Manda

“Juliet, Naked.” Couldn’t put it down, and that’s saying something because I have three kids and often HAVE to put a book down–but that one, I couldn’t. Carried it in my purse and read in pediatrician waiting rooms, while my kids did sports, etc.

  • Sharon

“The School of Essential Ingredients” by Erica Bauermeister and “Sarah’s Key” by Tatiana De Rosnay were my two favorite reads this year.

  • August

Juliet Naked by far the best of the year

I love this topic, so many ideas for future books to read. Ive been trying to read Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series and I am struggling. It kind of sucks.

    • Clary

rofl..the show is way better ;)

    • DE

Yeah, I started reading the books since I love the show. The show is way better. The pace of the books drives me crazy. I read the entire Laurel K Hamilton Anita Blake series in less time.

David Sedaris “When you are engulfed in Flames” is absolutely hysterical and amazing
John Irving “Last Night in Twisted River” he gets better and better with every book…

    • KRibbons

LOVED “When you are engulfed in flames” Sedaris is NEVER a let down.

In nonfiction, my faves were “Crazy for the Storm” by Norman Ollestad, “The Ramen King and I” by Andy Raskin and “Born Round” by Frank Bruni.

    • kct

“Await your reply,” “This is where I leave you,” and “Born Round” were among my favorites this year. Thanks for posting as I will look into the other books you mentioned. I also enjoyed, “The wrong mother” by Sophie Hannah and, “The kids are all right” by Li Welch and her siblings.

      • kct
