Walmart and Amazon get into price war: $9 hardcovers

Be prepared to say goodbye to Borders and BARNES AND NOBLE……..
Borders almost filed for bankruptcy earlier this year, and Barnes & Noble is closing the book on its smaller B. Dalton chain and shuttering other stores. Keep in mind that a lot of this is mainly because of the crappy economy. It’s not just books, people aren’t buying ANYTHING these days that isn’t a absolute necessity. Blame the banks and their slimy practices, not just Walmart or eBooks for the possible demise of bookstores.
I am happy for this change. The local library is very limited and book prices, especially for fiction (e.g.,Sarah Palin’s book) are too high now.
The scary stuff is already happening. There are far fewer books in my local B&N than there were last year at this time.
The worst thing is, authors get little enough money as it is. If we drive down the price of a hardcover, they get even less. The way I see it, a $24 book give me days of pleasure, and then I can share it with others and reread it for years…. but two $12 movie tickets give me four hours that may or may not be entertaining…so books (even full-price hardbacks) are a much better bargain than movies.
I agree, Cara. I have a novel at a publisher now and I will only get 6% of the paperback cover price for each copy sold as a payment. I wrote the book, it’s my product they’re selling, yet I only get 6%. Explain that to me.
I have a Kindle and it is a supplement to hardcopy books not a replacement. There are some books that I read to pass the time on a plane, for my book club, or just to see what it’s about- those are Kindle books (ex. Twilight series). The books that are meaningful, close to my heart, or I want people to see me reading are hard copy books (ex. anything by Wally Lamb).
I read every chance i get, but sometimes I only have a few moments to do it. With a printed book, I just pick it up, open it up and start reading. I don’t want to have to locate my digital reader, turn it on, wait for it to power up, and then scroll until I find my page. Not worth the effort.
